The research in Zhang Lab lies at the interface of chemistry, biology and engineering, with special interest in discovery, biosynthesis and functional study of microbial natural products. Our research themes include, but not limited to, identifying new bioactive natural products from a diverse collection of microbes, understanding the intriguing enzymology underlying natural product biosynthesis, producing "unnatural" natural products with improved pharmaceutical properties, probing the biological functions of natural products in their native environment or drug screening settings, and developing new research toolkit to promote the above-mentioned research.
