Teaching
CHM 222, Organic Reactions and Synthesis, University of Miami, Fall 2024
Learning objectives:
Recognize reactive sites, describe reactivity and predict reactions. For a given structure, be able to recognize reactivity in terms of nucleophilicity and electrophilicity of functional groups.
Construct reaction mechanisms based on electronic interactions and bond formation/breaking. For a given reaction, be able to construct the steps of a reaction mechanism. Be able to recognize alternate routes, possible rearrangements and side products.
Describe reactions in terms of energetic states and relative stability of products and reactants. Be able to map reaction mechanisms, including starting materials, intermediates, transitions states and products to an energy profile.
Interpret spectra to determine molecular structures. Be able to assign functional groups and structural features based on chemical spectra.
Be able to design and complete multistep syntheses: Be able combine individual reactions into a synthetic sequence and carry out retrosynthetic analyses.
CHM 592/692, Topics in Chemistry Polymer Chemistry, University of Miami, Spring 2024
Learning objectives: Polymeric materials are widely used in our lives on a daily basis. Upon completing this course, the students are expected to have gained sufficient fundamental knowledge of polymer chemistry toward their future careers as industrial polymer chemists or academic scientists, as illustrated by the following capabilities:
Describe polymer structural features
Illustrate various polymerization reactions
Understand reaction mechanisms for polymerization processes
Apply polymer modification chemistries
Analyze physical, chemical, and mechanical properties data of polymers
Formulate structure-property relationships of polymeric materials
Construct retrosynthetic analyses for novel polymer structures
Design polymer structures based upon desired properties and applications
