Political Economy of Energy and the Environment, Sustainable Development, Climate Opinion, Southeast Asia and the Global South
Zhai Gen is a PhD Student and Fulbright Foreign Student Program scholar in Political Science at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), with research interest in political economy of energy and the environment, public opinion on climate change, with a focus on Southeast Asia. His particular interest is the political patronage and identity politics on sustainable economic development and environmental outcomes.
He was previously the founding Assistant Director of Research at the Asia School of Business (ASB) and a public policy research at Khazanah Research Institute, involved in both research publications, articles, and advocacy work to the Malaysian government. He had previous research interest on food security, the socio-economic impact of automation on industrial policy and digital gig economy. He obtained his Masters in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from the University of Oxford.Â
