Jack Hoare, a BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts student from Arts University Plymouth has created an experimental witchcraft horror film shot in and around Devon, specifically Dartmoor. The inspirations for this project came from films such as Mandy (Panos Cosmatos, 2018) for the dreamlike visuals and harsh red lighting, Tetsuo: The Iron Man (Shinya Tsukamoto, 1989) for the harsh noise soundtrack and A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness (Ben Rivers and Ben Russell, 2013) for the beautiful forest visuals and landscapes. Fundamentally, the project was a culmination of Jack's exploration into the experimental uses of sound and the relationship between noise music and avant-garde film, which was the topic for his publication.
The film follows a witch navigating through a mystical realm, the film explores witchcraft, mythical creatures and unknown, dreamlike/trippy landscapes. All the while pairing the visually confusing edit with a visceral noise soundtrack that was created using guitar pedals, various instruments, sample recordings, foley and contact microphones.
