Larry V. Shumway (1934-), from Arizona state, is an ethnomusicologist, teacher, author, and traditional fiddler. Shumway received his BA in music from Brigham Young University (BYU), his MA in Asian studies from Seton Hall University, and his PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Washington. In 1974, he was given a joint faculty appointment at BYU in the Department of the Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature and in the School of Music. He has conducted field work in American, Japan, and Kingdom of Tonga on various traditional music genres and dance forms --including Japanese Shinto ritual music, American traditional music, and Tongan national music, culture, and dance. Shumway has taught music and Japanese language. He is also a fifth generation fiddler, and has authored several books and articles about the fiddle.

Although this characteristic of the Hautonga is by no means consistently in evidence, I heard it enough throughout the evaluation period to be convinced that it is real. Nor do I think this residual brightness, if it is that, is necessarily a tonal aberration; the effect, rather, is of moving somewhat closer to the performers, which will always make them sound a little brighter. In all of this, of course, the Hautonga is very much in line with contemporary tastes for an upfront, immediate, and incisive presentation. And I may be overly sensitive to it because most of my current reference units are either dead neutral or go a bit in the opposite direction.

The Tonga rhythm makes the song playful, energetic and extremely rhythmic. You instantly start tapping your feet. Some of the songs have ghungroo to make it more catchy. I guess the tonga has ghungroos attached to the wheels or even around the neck of the horses. The composers also add the sounds resembling tapping of the horseshoe. It is said the composers used the coconut shells to strike on a tile to imitate the horseshoe sound. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of the musical instruments to identify them in the song. But I guess, Dholak is also added to enhance the sound.

I hope you all enjoyed the songs. And, I did repeat the word tonga too many times. But had no option! Please add your favourite song with the Tonga rhythm. You can of course repeat the composer from the list, or add a new composer. So go ahead.

Oh yes! This one fits. But I skipped it as the tonga beats sound somewhat overshadowed in the verses by the tabla/dholak. But the main attraction for me of the song is Mukesh, playing the gadiwala.

Thank you for adding it.

Anupji, a great post trying to cover all the great composers. Jaidev also tried his hand at the Tonga beats. Here is a song on a Tonga sung by Asraani while riding a Tonga. In fact, Alaap, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee was a bit of a horse cart vs mechanized vehicles movie with some lovely music by Jaidev. The song is Binati Sunle Tanik Mori.

The movie is really good and worth watching.

Would like to add Laxmikant Pyarelal to the list of composers with a 70s song (again). Not sure if you have heard this and also whether it fits into your tonga beats criteria.

But I used to enjoy this song in my childhood. Its a fun song with the ghoda gaadi galloping amidst snow.

Sorry for the Faux pas committed. Downright carelessness on my part. Promise to be more vigilant in future. I do agree the horseshoe striking the ground creates a special effect and tonga contributes nothing to it. There are plenty of songs with horses alone and so I made separate posts. Each is entitled to his opinion and I respect your views. About Duniyaan na mane song, I drew a parallel between the two songs in terms of the tune.

Yes, and I agree, there are many songs with horse alone. My idea was to collect songs with the tonga rhythm irrespective of its picturisation. So I included both scenarios in a single post.

And, the tunes of the songs from duniya na mane and chacha zindabad do sound similar. ?

To bring true Naim sound quality into this unique space, Naim and Bentley engineers needed to re-write the rulebook for in-car audio and reject traditional approaches. The result? New worldwide benchmarks for in-cabin sound technology and incredible depth of music quality that has to be heard to be believed.

When creating an audio system, whether it is for a house, a car, or an embedded or portable device, there is always a balance between cost, size, and quality. Quality has many contributing factors but one of them is the ability for a system to recreate the whole range of audio frequencies needed. This blog will discuss those frequencies and their various subsets as well as how they impact the design of audio enclosures. It will also shed some light on when the different audio ranges are needed and when they are not in an end application.

This chart represents how many dB of SPL will be produced with a constant power input at different frequencies. In this case, the output is rather flat with a sharp drop off below 70 Hz and a shallower drop off above 20 kHz. This means that this audio device, with the same input power, will produce approximately the same sound pressure level between 70 Hz and 20 kHz but will produce significantly less sound pressure level outside of those boundaries.

Most objects have a resonant frequency - or a frequency at which an object naturally wants to vibrate. A guitar string, for example, when it is plucked, will vibrate at its resonant frequency. If you were to play the resonant frequency with a speaker near the guitar string, it would start to vibrate and increase in amplitude with time. This same phenomenon occurs with other objects, and in regards to audio, can cause unwanted rattles and buzzing with surrounding objects. Our blog on resonance and resonant frequency covers this topic in greater detail.

When designing an enclosure, you need to ensure that the enclosure itself does not have a natural resonant frequency in the same range as the expected audio output or the speaker itself will have both a non-linear output and unwanted harmonics. At the same time, controlling the resonance of a box, or widening the resonance range, is sometimes sought after, depending on the application. 2351a5e196
