Hey my store is setting up a second back-office machine for scanning in Mail box packages and doing Amazon boxes. Only problem is the zebra printer we got is not connecting for some reason keeps showing as offline. Have it connected to the computer via USB. No test pages are printing. First level tech support couldn't get it to work. Any help would be appreciated!

That is a question for the developers, not this forum. The usual reason is that

the license is wrong. In openSUSE, only software licensed under the GPL is

allowed. As the zebra cups driver is (implicitly) licensed under the GPL and the

LGPL, it should be OK. The only problem is that the zip file does not contain a

LICENSE file. Without that, the openSUSE maintainers might have decided that the

license is inappropriate and did not include the software.

I used one of these at a bike shop I used to work at while a student, and I had to go and uninstall the printer from the computer and reinstall it with new updated drivers in order to fix this problem, also restart the printer spooler service and you should be in business.

I have to +1 for checking your Paper Size - we had a similar issue before where the stocks in the driver had been changed around somehow (we blamed a driver update but never did verify it), it wasn't until we checked to make sure the paper size was right that we noticed - it was trying to print the document, but the stuff it was printing was "off the page", so the labels were blank. That's a very easy one to start with and cross off your list. (Come to think of it, check the margin settings in Quickbooks too, for the same reason)

Determine if it's a driver issue or a hardware issue. Hold down the button until it blinks once, it should print a config page, if that's blank then you know it's a hardware problem and it's probably not worth fixing. If it does print text then it's a driver issue. If it's a driver issue use Seagull's driver cleaner and reinstall.

Since the thermal head deteriorates over time, it is necessary to adjust the "darkness" setting on the printer. This actually controls the temperature of the print head. This setting can be accessed through the windows print driver under "Printer Defaults". The higher the number, the hotter the head. You want to set this as low as possible while still getting acceptable print quality. The hotter the setting, the faster the head deteriorates.

Our Zebras periodically have the label size in the physical zebra configuration go wonky and we have to back and re-setup the label sizes. This happens to us about once every two or three months on random zebra printers. (We have about 15 company wide.) If the label size is incorrect it will just spit out blank labels.

Not sure if it was recommended but I don't want to read everything here. Zebras for me have been notorious for this and oddly enough it ends up being a driver issue half the damn time (strange). Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your device.

Is it possible to direct print a stored pdf via a zebra printer in Java? I can't find any mention of them being compatible with direct printing and I can't get it to print. Would I need to communicate directly via zpl?

No. Adobe Reader prepares a document that the system's print service can consume. The print service then invokes the Zebra drivers, and those are what convert the document into the printer's native language. This is how all print drivers work on all platforms, not just on Windows. CUPS does the same thing on Linux and MacOS.

By the way ZPL is Zebra programming language which is proprietary to Zebra. You can directly write the ZPL String on to the serial or parallel port without installing any Zebra driver (rather using Windows Generic Text Printer driver). For example you can send following string directly to printer port (Serial, Parallel or Network)

To complete Justin answer, Link_OS printers addon PDF-direct is free for over the year. Just update to latest printer firmware, and same way upload PDF-direct addon to printer. Then pdf printing with generic text driver just working. Also tested on value series ZD220 ans ZD230 printers.

We received a reply to our ticket and the solution was to set a custom page size in the Zebra printer driver. Apparently there is a bug between some label printer drivers and Thinprint for this. After setting a custom page size, and setting it to the default in the Zebra driver, Thinprint started working fine.

We've done additional testing, and found that sometimes nothing will print at all from the VM, even though printing directly from the thin client to the printer works every time. Other printers continue to work fine within the VM, it's only affecting this single type of label printer. Tried updated drivers and to me it seems to be a ThinPrint issue or with the TP printer driver. It will spool to the printer in the VM, then quickly disappear and nothing will ever print. Nothing seems to show up in the Windows logs either. 006ab0faaa
