How to Become a Medical Biller

Remote medical billing, as a career, has been growing rapidly the past few years. More and more small practices are choosing to switch to remote medical billing due to decreased overhead and ease of use, and many people are starting to catch on. If you own your own medical billing company or work as a freelancer, you can technically work from anywhere in the world. If you love to travel, becoming a remote medical biller may be up your alley.

What Does a Medical Biller do?

Medical billers help code medical procedures after a session and help prepare and send the invoice to patients. In this type of career, you can work in private practices, clinics, hospitals, or at home, depending on the requirements of the specific practice or company you are working for.

If you don’t mind spending most of your working time dealing with codes, sitting down at a desk, and staring at a computer monitor, medical coding could be a great new career to look into.

Requirements for Medical Billing

While you don’t need a degree, having a certificate or an associate’s degree can be helpful. You’ll need to have good communication and math skills, and also have a solid understanding of basic medical terminology and billing procedures/billing software. Medical billing programs are available as either a certificate or at the Associate level (AA degree). After the AA degree, there are some schools that will offer a bachelor’s degree in the subject.

There are many resources that you should become familiar with as a medical biller. Arguably, the three most important texts are the CPT, ICD-10 and the HCPCS. These contain the necessary codes for medical billing to communicate with doctors and insurance companies to help receive reimbursements. There are also some specialized programs that can help students obtain relevant certifications, such as the Certified Professional Coder certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The American Health Information Management Association also offers the Certified Coding Associate designation. Having the proper training can make you appear more attractive to prospective employers.

While certifications are not always required, having one will set you apart from the crowd if you want to become a medical biller. If you decided to continue past the AA level, a bachelor’s degree can also set you up for management or administrative opportunities in the insurance or health care industry. Many companies look for relevant experience, so getting your foot in the door sooner – rather than later – is a good idea.
