These contain the necessary codes for medical billing to communicate with doctors and insurance companies to help receive reimbursements. There are also some specialized programs that can help students obtain relevant certifications, such as the Certified Professional Coder certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The American Health Information Management Association also offers the Certified Coding Associate designation. Having the proper training can make you appear more attractive to prospective employers.

While certifications are not always required, having one will set you apart from the crowd if you want to become a medical biller. If you decided to continue past the AA level, a bachelor’s degree can also set you up for management or administrative opportunities in the insurance or health care industry. Many companies look for relevant experience, so getting your foot in the door sooner – rather than later – is a good idea.
