Rumi loved everything about her garden: the bright red strawberries, the tall sunflowers, and the cool shade of the old oak tre7e. Everything, except for the fuzzy, zooming things called bees.

Rumi heard a little Buzzzzz. She knew that sound! It belonged to Maya, the busiest bee in the whole wide world. Maya was working, even on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

When Maya zipped close, Rumi immediately pulled her hat low and scurried to hide behind the gardening shed. “Oh dear,” Rumi whispered. “Too close! They look so fast and prickly!”

Maya didn't notice Rumi hiding. She was too busy gathering the sunshine dust—pollen—and carrying it from flower to flower. “Hello, little flower!” Maya hummed happily, tapping her fuzzy head gently against a soft white petal.

When Maya flew away, she left a little golden gift behind. The flower held Maya’s gift close. It needed that pollen to start making something wonderful!

“See?” buzzed Maya, landing safely on a plump strawberry. “If we don’t move the pollen, the flowers can’t grow the juicy food you love to eat!”

Rumi squinted her eyes. “But… don’t you want to sting me?” she asked quietly. Maya stopped cleaning her antennae. “Oh, goodness, no! We only sting if we are scared, or if someone squishes us by mistake.”

“Our job is to work,” Maya explained. “We are very important! We make sure the berries, the apples, and even the tall bright sunflowers have what they need to grow big and strong.”

Rumi smiled, a real, wide smile. “Thank you, Maya! I didn’t know you were such a hard worker!” She carefully pointed to a clump of bright purple lavender. “This is a safe flower, if you want to visit it next.”

The garden buzzed with a happy sound. Rumi learned that helpfulness doesn't have to be scary. She knew that every tiny, fuzzy, busy bee was working hard to keep the whole wide world full of color and snacks!
