The undergrad Project & thesis is a combination of various aspects of technical computing and covers a wide range of complex engineering elements. This research project presents a simplified model of a Mars Exploration Rover whose purpose is to serve as the 'eyes and brain' of a planetary scientist. This model focuses on machine vision and scientific instrumentation for effective in-situ analysis in advanced rover technology and experimental processing through quantum computation. For the vision aspect, images of the Martian terrain were primarily used to isolate, detect and classify geological features (i.e., rocks) through mask-edge filtering, SNR desolution, and rendered output, yielding an average of 88.8% accuracy in detection and segmentation. The science module uses a LIBS based spectrophotometer model to capture spectral information and analyze elemental composition of the geological samples. For a set of liquid and solid samples, the module was able to correctly match 60-65% of wavelength information from the sample spectra to identify basic elements (e.g. C, O, N, Fe). Finally, two and three qubit quantum-circuits were tested through IBMQ computer, which showed classical equivalent of 0 and 1 being generated through uncertain probabilities. While the experiment proved the concept of ‘true’ randomness, it cannot be determined to what scale quantum computers will aid in scientific data analysis of space exploration. In conclusion, the model was successful in demonstrating the basic scientific objectives of a Mars exploration rover.
