Amenti: As much as I loved the book and how relevant and timeless I have found it to be, I knew that language was one of the major barriers keeping this great text from being accessible to millions of Oromos across East Africa. Since it also happens to be very short to read and translate, as a Qubee Generation, I decided that I should try my best to remove that one barrier and make sure my people have access to one of the Must-Read books of the 20th century. I reached out to a lot of people to see if the book has already been translated and found no such confirmation, so I started translating it myself around January of 2022. However, right after I completed translating the book, I have come to learn the fact that it has actually been translated to Afaan Oromoo by Abbaa Caalaa Lataa more than ten years ago. I have since reached out to Abbaa Caalaa Lataa, just out of respect and to thank him for having acted on this a decade earlier. Besides the fact that the time and energy could have been used to translate some other great texts out there, presence of two versions that are a decade apart could only mean another round of campaign to reach an even wider audience at a time when digital presence has grown exponentially.

Good news from the Ethiopian translation work project. Brother Abebe from the city of Adama has rejoined the translators to translate the Message of the Hour into the Oromic language. As well, Brother Moges, the main Oromo translator writes:

Attention-based neural machine translation (attentional NMT), which jointly aligns and translates, has got much popularity in recent years. Besides, a language model needs an accurate and larger bilingual dataset_ from the source to the target, to boost translation performance. There are many such datasets publicly available for well-developed languages for model training. However, currently, there is no such dataset available for the English-Afaan Oromo pair to build NMT language models. To alleviate this problem, we manually prepared a 25K English-Afaan Oromo new dataset for our model. Language experts evaluate the prepared corpus for translation accuracy. We also used the publicly available English-French, and English-German datasets to see the translation performances among the three pairs. Further, we propose a deep attentional NMT model to train our models. Experimental results over the three language pairs demonstrate that the proposed system and our new dataset yield a significant gain. The result from the English-Afaan Oromo model achieved 1.19 BLEU points over the previous English-Afaan Oromo Machine Translation (MT) models. The result also indicated that the model could perform as closely as the other developed language pairs if supplied with a larger dataset. Our 25K new dataset also set a baseline for future researchers who have curiosity about English-Afaan Oromo machine translation.

For every person or company trying to localize their products or services for the Ethiopian and Kenyan audience, it is important to understand the values of the target market, and most importantly, the language of communication and how it can best be translated.

Usually before translating the User Guide into a different language we want to have the Drupal user interface at least mostly translated. The user guide is full of screenshots, and it helps to have the UI in the screenshots match the language in the guide. I don't think it has to be a strict requirement, but I do think it would be good to make some progress on that front first. It looks like there's an open issue here #2296539: Add Oromo (Afaan Oromo) to l.d.o

When it comes time to translate the user guide content there's quite a bit of documentation about that process here _guide_guidelines/guidelines-translating..., and here _guide_guidelines/pm-guide.html#s-315set...

Oromo is a subject pro-drop language. That is, neutral sentences in which the subject is not emphasized do not require independent subject pronouns: kaleessa dhufne 'we came yesterday'.The Oromo word that translates 'we' does not appear in this sentence, though the person and number are marked on the verb dhufne ('we came') by the suffix -ne. When the subject in such sentences needs to be given prominence for some reason, an independent pronoun can be used: 'nuti kaleessa dhufne' 'we came yesterday'.

So I think: I know that flavor is sabor, so maybe they conjugated sabor. Wait a minute, sabor is not a verb so you can't conjugate it - what is going on? But it can't be a conjugation of saber - makes no sense. I go to Google translate and type in taste and up comes a number of nouns, and for the verbs it shows probar. OK - it's bad Spanish on the sign. But then I see "show all 24 translations", so I click and sure enough saber is one of the 24 translations of taste. Who knew?

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A literature review was conducted and leprosy experts were consulted. The first draft of the questionnaire was developed in Ethiopia by exploring conceptual understanding, item relevance and operational suitability. Then, the first draft of the tool was piloted in Ethiopia, Mozambique and Tanzania. The outcome is a questionnaire comprising nine questions to determine the case detection delay and two annexes for ease of administration: a local calendar to translate the patient's indication of time to number of months and a set of pictures of the signs of leprosy. In addition, a body map was included to locate the signs. A 'Question-by-Question Guide' was added to the package, to provide support in the administration of the questionnaire.
