Za Eng Mawi is a refugee from Burma. She restarted her academic journey by obtaining a GED diploma and enrolling in a business administration program at Georgia Gwinnett College, where she discovered her passion for research. To pursue her dream of becoming a researcher, she applied for a master's program at Georgia State University, which prepared her for a doctoral program. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in economics at Georgia State University and is a graduate research assistant at Georgia Policy Labs and the EPIC Program. Her research interests include the economics of education, social mobility, and immigration. Specifically, she is working on research papers about the academic integration of refugee and immigrant children in the US education system such as the impact of enrolling at a charter school and the impact of the age at arrival, which is inspired by her experience as a refugee. In her free time, she enjoys watching Japanese animation and reading fiction novels.Â
