Brief Bio
Dr. Yupal Shukla is a distinguished service researcher and educator with more than 18 years of teaching and research experience spanning India, Europe, and the Middle East. He holds a PhD in Management from the University of Bologna, Italy, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious research universities and has developed an internationally recognised academic career centred on service research, technology-enabled service systems, and transformative service experiences.
Dr. Shukla currently serves as Senior Lecturer at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), UAE, an AACSB-accredited institution, and as Director of the International Research Symposium in Service Management (IRSSM), one of the leading global platforms dedicated to advancing service scholarship and interdisciplinary service research. Over the course of his career, he has held academic and research positions at the University of Bologna, Italy, Ganpat University, India, and the University of Memphis, USA, and has been a Visiting Scholar at Hanken School of Economics, Finland. He has also served as visiting faculty at leading institutions such as MICA Ahmedabad, MDI Gurgaon, NMIMS Mumbai, and IIM Mumbai, contributing to the development of service-oriented thinking among future leaders.
Dr. Shukla’s research focuses on service ecosystems, customer experience, service innovation, and the role of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, digital platforms, and automation) in shaping service interactions and well-being outcomes. His work is grounded in contemporary service theories, including service-dominant logic and transformative service research, and explores how individuals, organizations, and technologies co-create value within complex service systems. His research also examines critical issues such as trust, psychological ownership, sustainability, and invisibility in service interactions, particularly in digitally mediated environments.
He has published over 30 research articles in leading ABDC A* and A-rated journals, with his work featured in prominent international outlets such as the Journal of Service Management, Journal of Services Marketing, Journal of Service Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Research, International Journal of Information Management, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Consumer Behaviour, International Business Review, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Online Information Review, International Journal of Emerging Markets, International Review on Public and Nonprofit Marketing, British Food Journal, Journal of Vacation Marketing, International Journal of Consumer Studies, and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights, among others . In recognition of his contributions to the field of service research, Dr. Shukla has received several prestigious honours, including the LIAM Glynn Scholarship from SERVSIG, the Young Service Researcher Award, and multiple best paper and highly commended awards at international conferences such as IRSSM. He has secured competitive research funding exceeding one million US dollars, reflecting his ability to lead and sustain impactful research initiatives in service domains.
Dr. Shukla also plays an active role in shaping the global service research community through editorial leadership. He currently serves as Special Issue Editor for the Journal of Consumer Behaviour and the Journal of Service Theory and Practice, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Services Marketing. These roles underscore his position as a leading contributor to the advancement of service scholarship and interdisciplinary research on service systems.
