Short Bio

    After studying at Keio University (B. A. in Economics, 1981) and at the University of Pennsylvania (M. A. in International Relations, 1982), Yukinobu Kitamura specialized on household saving and bequest behaviour for his D.Phil. in economics at the University of Oxford (1989).  Became research assistant at the Institute of Economics and Statistics, University of Oxford in 1987, then joined the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development: OECD in 1988, and works as an Economist at the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies of the Bank of Japan since 1991.  

Joined academia as guest associate professor at Graduate School of Business and Commerce, Keio University in 1996 and associate professor of economics at Institute of Economic Research: IER, Hitotsubashi University in 1999.  In 2002, he was appointed to professor of economics at Hitotsubashi University and visiting professor at Keio University.  He served as the Director of IER in 2015-2017.  In 2020, he was appointed to professor of Faculty of Economics at Rissho University, and Professor Emeritus at IER, HItotsubashi University.

Besides these, he was assigned to the vice chairperson of The Statistics Commission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2015-2019, and the chairperson in 2019-2021, and served as the  chairperson of the Economic Committee of the Science Council of Japan in 2017-2020. He was a special advisor to the Minieter of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2022-2023. 

 

    His research is focused on empirical works on the Japanese economy and household behaviour, which includes public finance, monetary and fiscal policy and macroeconomics and applied econometrics.

He wrote over 50 scientific papers including “Lessons from Generational Accounting in Japan” American Economic Review, 89(2), 1999, pp.171-175 (with Noriyuki Takayama),  “Household Savings in Japan revisited” Research in Economics, Elsevier, 2001, 55(2), pp.135-153 (with Noriyuki Takayama and Fumiko Arita), “Information Contents of Inflation Indexed Bond Prices: Evaluation of U. S. Treasury Inflation Protection Securities” Monetary and Economic Studies, Bank of Japan, 2004, 22(3) pp.115-144, and “Decomposition of Redistributive Effects of Japanese Personal Income Tax, 1984-2009” FinanzArchiv/ Public Finance Analysis, September 2016, Vol.72, pp.334-368 (with Takeshi Miyazaki). He wrote a book titled, Quest for Good Momey from Springer in November 2022.
