RESEARCH EXPEIENCE

Lab Manager & Postdoctoral Associate

Agronomy Dept., University of Florida

Managed interdisciplinary projects with USDA-ARS, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Geomatics Department, and Electrical/Computer Engineering Departments at UF, looking at detection methods for maturity, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and aflatoxin in peanut under drought conditions. The detection methods included machine learning, remote sensing, hyperspectral analysis, and chemical analysis. Conducted an international project with the South Korean government to detect the early root development in sesame. Studied the maturity memory and primed acclimation effects on seed science. Supervised graduate students conducting experiments investigating the physiological mechanisms associated with plant stress. Carried out field & lab-based experiments utilizing physiological measurement equipment for scientific research trials. Managed pool vehicle fleet, 10 interns and undergraduate students, and oversaw graduate student workflow.

Graduate Research Assistant in Plant Breeding

Agronomy Dept., University of Florida

Worked in all aspects of a large, field-based, plant breeding program with a background in plant pathology and quantitative genetic. Assisted breeders with making crosses in the greenhouse, planting with planters, harvesting, developing segregation populations, and making selections in the field. Developed genetic markers (SNP and SSR) linked to disease resistance genes by GBS (genotyping-by-sequencing) in mapping populations. Experience in high throughput genotyping, association mapping, QTL mapping, and marker-assisted selection. Managed and analyzed large amounts of breeding data to achieve genetic gains, breeding values, heritability, trait correlation, and genotype-by-environment (G*E) information through the use of AGROBASE, ASReml, and SAS.

Research Intern in Agronomy

National Taiwan University & Academia Sinica, Taiwan

Conducted map-based cloning project for non-dehiscent (Ndh) genes in corn and narrowed down the candidate genes to only 50 genes. Assisted in sequencing the whole genome of Oryza nivara as part of the international project (Oryza Map Alignment Project, O-MAP) through chromosome walking with bacteria artificial chromosome (BAC). Used Sanger sequencing and SSR markers to find the heading date genes in rice and conducted a phylogenic analysis from different Taiwanese landraces.
