Think about the stories from the Bible of people God used. He entrusted Job, Joseph, Daniel, Moses, David, Isaiah, Paul, and many others with major trials. Most of the people we remember faced great trials. In fact, we remember them because of how they faced their trials. Had they never faced a major trial, we probably would not know their name.

Because of what they do. Below are some perspective changers that God has encouraged me with while facing trials. If you have the courage to follow God wherever he leads, these perspectives will be more than head knowledge. They will embed themselves deep in your heart because, at times, you will cling to them like a drowning person to a floatation device. Storms will come, but these truths will keep you afloat.

When God leads me into a trial, he is preparing to work for his glory. Historically, this is how God prefers to work. Gideon started off with an army one-fifth the size of the Midianites, and then God made the odds even worse:

I do not always handle trials well. (I think one of the reasons God moved me to Africa was to teach me how impatient I really am.) When things do not go as planned, traffic is endless, ministries struggle, paperwork abounds, or health suffers, the opportunities for impatience are many.

As I go through trials, others are watching. They are watching to see if I respond in faith. Having peace in comfort is normal. Having peace in trials is not. Trials give me an opportunity to speak about the hope that I have. If I complain or have a bad attitude when facing trials, I forfeit my opportunity to speak of the greatness God!

Unfortunately, joy in the midst of loss is not my default setting. My default is complaining, self-pity, and seeking sympathy. Before I respond in joy God has to teach me that Jesus is better than anything this world has to offer. He teaches through trials and loss that He alone is my treasure and great reward.

God entrusts me with trials as a gift. If I respond to the trials in faith and holiness, I can have joy in the fact that I am storing up rewards in heaven. If I respond to the trials with fear or complaining, I miss the opportunity for reward.

Even though this is listed last, I always start with examining my own heart. God often uses trials or sicknesses to get our attention and reveal sin. As a loving Father, he wants to restore us to fellowship with him.

4 When Jesus received the message, He said, This sickness is not to end in death; but [on the contrary] it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.

Any trial a believer faces can ultimately bring glory to God because God can bring good out of any bad situation. When trouble comes, do you grumble, complain, and blame God, or do you see your problems as opportunities to honor him?

I made it explicitly clear that the Bible tells us that every trial we have, God has determined it necessary for us. I think we can prove that from Romans 8:28 and other places of Scripture. But the ways that God or the methods that God uses to bring necessary trials are different for each person. So, let me take time to discuss that here:

yeah, its sad so many players hate aspects of a game sooo much, that they have to FORCE gameplay in those areas. theyre not dedicated enough to just create a better event than arena, or make it better somehow lol. cant catch bugs in their coding, that regular discord users find repeatedly. the game is dying. theyve lost a dedicated hardcore cash player here. i wont touch the campaign sh!t anymore. fk that one trash mythic. i dont need the stuff at the end that they sucker everyone in with. wanna shorten the kingdom pass event, ill save my money there too. i love how these campaign tasks are things we all do anyway, yet no one fkn does pvp. cause they made it reroll through the same 5 gd teams, for real earn glory, from nowhere BUT pvp.

This path will feel gratifying at first. We may soothe our anger for the moment. But this path will also change us. Each small trial will chisel away at us, shaping us into the image of grumbling discontents. We will grow more prone to murmur. Trouble and pain will begin to offend us, as if they infringe on our right to an easy life. And when big trials do come, they will toss us like a twig on the waters.

This path will feel painful at first. We may need to silence some loud voices in our heads. But this path will also change us. Each small trial will chisel away at us, shaping us into the image of Jesus: kind when interrupted, calm when accused, patient when misunderstood. We will grow more prone to receive each moment with gratitude. We will treat trouble and pain as allies in our fight for holiness. And when big trials do come, they may shake us, but they will not shatter us.

Now, please, please, as I have tried to speak of childlike, Christlike, saintly submission to the trials and tribulations of life and to divine commandments, however tried and tested you may already feel, please do not walk out of here today eager to tell your absentee roommate that Elder Holland gave a devotional today on the Word of Wisdom. If you want to see an old man cry, do that! I pray you will find my message larger and more significant than the sorrow of drunk driving.

While some days the will to keep fighting this battle feels impossible, two things keep me in the fight: The first is the finish line where the glory of Christ awaits us for eternity. Along with that is the amazing truth that Christ has already won this battle for us! As his children, we simply need to hold firmly to him.

Yet, even though we are assured of victory in Christ, how do we persevere day to day when the reality of our trials makes us feel far from victorious? What do we do when our circumstances seem more like a hindrance to serving the Lord and living our life to the fullest?

At times, circumstances that may seem like a hindrance to the gospel and a threat to our lives may be the very platform God uses for the gospel to be displayed through us. As believers, we can be confident that even circumstances that perplex us are being sovereignly orchestrated for the purpose of growing us up in Christ and displaying his glory. Evil may appear to flourish for a time, but the Lord has established its boundaries and will ultimately wield it for the advancement of his purposes.

Thanks for reading! My name is Sarah Walton and I'm a stay-at-home mom to 4 little humans. Life has been filled with blessings and sorrows as we've walked through special needs, Lyme Disease and chronic illness as a family, financial loss, job loss, and the slow loss of my ability to walk due to a degenerative ankle. Much of our life is spent navigating the struggles of illness, going to doctors, and learning to find joy in things of lasting value and things we never appreciated as much as we do now. But above all, God has been faithful through it all - meeting us in the valley, teaching us to walk closely with him, and watching him redeem what often seems unredeemable. Life often hurts - but because of Christ, it is full of hope. In my few spare moments, I enjoy writing and speaking about real life, the trials we continue to face, and how the hope of Christ and God's Word speaks into every aspect of it. I have co-authored Hope When It Hurts (alongside Kristen Wetherell) and have most recently co-authored Together Through the Storms - biblical encouragements for your marriage when life hurts, with my hubby, Jeff. You can also find me writing at places like Desiring God, Revive Our Hearts, Unlocking the Bible, Risen Motherhood, and other resources. Thanks for reading! May my words always serve to point you to the hope of Christ and the good news of the Gospel.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. ...

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
