Queering Lunar New Year Project is Wales' first ever lunar new year event group, brought to you by the queer East/Southeast Asian (ESEA) community in Wales. Queering Lunar New Year is an annual dual-event which aims to showcase the culture of Lunar New Year as defined by the queer ESEA folks through the form of a feast and festival. Each event focuses on different aspect of Lunar New Year celebration. The FEAST highlights the gastronomical aspect of the celebration, which to many who celebrate see as the core-spirit part of the occasion. Whereas the FEST is an exhibition of storytelling through the form of performance, cultural exchange, story sharing and craft selling.
Why QLNY Exists
As much as culture shapes who we are, we also shape the culture we call our own. At QLNY, we proudly showcase a culture that is both queer and ESEA.
Often overlooked in mainstream media, QLNY creates a platform to challenge stereotypes and represent intersectionalities.
Sometimes it's not all about educating allies, it's also about having a space where your identities can co-exist and you can feel safe in.
Finding kindred souls and calling our shared space home.
Draig Feast a smaller scale get-together to share cozy moments together with our chosen family all whilst sharing the food made with love. The Feast aims to replicate 'the reunion dinner', striving to provide a safe space for those who celebrate.
Draig Fest is all about story-telling and culture showcasing. The festival features performances, vibrant cultural exchanges, and heartfelt story-sharing, bringing people closer with colours and tears.

Queering Lunar New Year 2026 is set to be yet another exciting celebration of Lunar New Year. Our aim this year is to return back to focus on the reunion dinner. We are making our main event a mix of both Feast and Fest for a richer focus on celebrating ESEA food and the passion that comes from it. Our committee is focused on building a more accepting connection and prioritising safe-spaces for LGBT+ diaspora to experience the joy around reunion.
Celebrating a rich array of ESEA home meals is a comfort for diaspora that can go underappreciated from allies and the western world. Sharing a particular meal, made authentically, by people who also miss those dishes and flavors creates a stronger connection between our ESEA community.
What’s new for 2026?
We have spent the last couple of years prioritizing our performers and artists. Our team wishes to build on that further however our outreach is limited as we are a small team. This year we are focusing on expanding our team networks and reach out to more organisations and doing some behind the scenes work to carry on supporting our artists and maintaining our event and what we do for many more years to come.
Our theme for 2026:
Home and Hearth
“Home and Hearth” emerged from a conversation within our team, when we asked ourselves what we wanted Draig Fest to be for us, and for the Queer ESEA community living in Wales.
The word home surfaced almost immediately. For many of us, as immigrants or descendants of immigrants, the idea of home can feel murky. While it may come easily to some, others struggle with what home means, what it offers, and what emotions it holds, especially when queerness complicates that relationship further.
Through Draig Fest, we want to create more than just an event for Queer ESEA communities. We want to cultivate a feeling of home. This is where hearth comes in, a concept deeply rooted in Welsh culture, often associated with warmth, gathering, and belonging.
By bringing home and hearth together, we aim to create a space that honours both our diasporic experiences and our connection to the land we now live on: a place of shared warmth, care, and community.
Impact: Align your organisation with an initiative that fosters inclusivity and celebrates diversity in the growing ESEA and queer communities.
Visibility: Gain exposure to a passionate, engaged audience through our in-person events and digital campaigns.
Legacy: Be part of reshaping cultural narratives, proving that tradition and modern identities can coexist beautifully.
Join us in making QLNY 2026 an unforgettable celebration. Together, we’ll create a space where everyone feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
Queering Lunar New Year 2025 is set to be yet another exciting celebration of Lunar New Year. Our aim this year remains steadfast -- to create a safe space for our queer ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) folks in a context where we rarely associate queerness with. For many, Lunar New Year is a time of family gatherings that can sometimes feel unwelcoming due to blatant queerphobia and/or transphobia. QLNY bridges this gap, creating an affirming environment where tradition and queerness can indeed coexist harmoniously.
As we welcome the Year of the Wood Snake, we’re excited to continue QLNY’s core offerings:
The Feast: A communal dining experience that honours the flavours and traditions of Lunar New Year with a queer-inclusive lens.
The Festival: A cultural showcase featuring performances, workshops, and interactive activities that celebrate both ESEA heritage and LGBTQIA+ identity.
What’s new for 2025?
In 2025, we’re building on the foundation of last year's success. Aiming to further amplify underrepresented voices, foster connections, and expand the celebration’s reach.
Our theme for 2025: REGENERATION AND RECLAMATION
Regeneration and Reclamation as inspired by the year of the Snake -- an emblem of transformation and renewal in the lunar zodiac. Spring represents renewal and rebirth and as queer ESEA people, we are proudly reclaiming our identities and celebrating them unapologeticaly with the diaspora.
