The Schedule and FAQ

Schedule and location details will be shared by email during the registration process. This is likely to begin by the end of April (and will continue until we are full.)

What is a typical daily schedule at YSP?

Complete daily schedules will be shared closer to the program, but typically the program runs 9:15am-3pm. Students can arrive and depart via car or public transit - a group typically walks to the Blue Line train (a <5 minute walk on campus) at the end of the day. In the morning we start with a topical lecture followed by hands on activities. Lunch is provided for free and there is usually a guest lecture in the afternoon followed by additional activities. See examples of our past guest lectures on the main page.

What math classes do I need to have taken to come to YSP?

You don't need to have taken any particular math courses to participate. The main requirement is that you are really interested in being in the program. We have students at a variety of levels, and we separate into groups.

Who will the instructors be?

UIC PhD students in mathematics and UIC professors run the program. We typically have at least seven instructors on a given day.

How many weeks should I apply for?

In the past we've had students attend anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. Pick the weeks which interest you most!

How much does YSP cost?

YSP is free. The UIC Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science supports the program along with Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (co-PI Brooke Shipley) through its grant DMS-1929348 from the National Science Foundation. YSP at UIC is also supported by the NSF CAREER grant of James Freitag (DMS-1945251). Donations to the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science have been an important part of the extensive support we have recieved to run YSP.
