Interested in joining YOW but not sure what membership entails? Here’s some more detailed information about the time commitment and responsibilities.
We have weekly meetings once a week that last about an hour. We also have 2 mandatory Saturday afternoon training sessions each semester in which we run through the curriculum in a classroom simulation in order to really prepare us for the classroom.
We visit 2 schools each semester, and we visit each of them twice. YOW presenters go in for all of the teacher’s class periods, which is usually 5 periods. Each class period lasts 40 minutes to 1 hour. First, we visit Doherty Memorial High School for a 3-day visit. Then we visit Burncoat High School and do the same 3-day curriculum. After that, we go back to Doherty for a 2-day follow-up visit, and then back to Burncoat a 2-day visit with the same follow-up curriculum.
Before each school visit, we send out an online form that asks for your availability, given the class period times for the scheduled visit days. With this information, each YOW member is generally scheduled for 1-3 class periods per school visit. You will never be alone when presenting! The teacher will be in the room, and you will be with at least one (but usually 2-3) other YOWers.
As a first-time presenter, you’ll be a “shadow,” meaning that you can take a step back and observe in the classroom before you present for the first time. As a shadow, you can still help out if you would like, especially during small-group activities.
Of course, we also make sure to fit in plenty of fun activities and social events into our YOW schedule. Four square, pumpkin decorating, tie dying, and board games are our favorites.
If all of this sounds good to you, please email us at yoworcester@gmail.com so we can add you to our email list. We are always happy to meet with potential members before, after, or outside of our weekly meeting time!
