Youth Outreach Worcester: A student-run education organization at Clark University
Youth Outreach Worcester (YOW) is a student run organization that facilitates interactive workshops and conversations with Worcester youth. We challenge stereotypes by encouraging an understanding of diversity! Through these conversations, YOW works to foster awareness about issues dealing with bullying, violence, discrimination, and prejudice.
As a club, we go into local Worcester public schools (Doherty Memorial and Burncoat High School) for a 3-day visit and a later 2-day follow-up visit. During this time, we promote conversation about topics that deserve more attention in the school setting (such as healthy relationships, stereotypes, and media bias), without pushing an agenda or specific set of values.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we weren't able to go into schools in the 2020-2021 school year and we don't yet know if we will be able to during the 2021-2022 year. In the meantime, we are continuing to meet at Clark to develop our curriculum and public speaking skills and build our YOW community!
"YOW's cool and teaches everyone to be themselves and to be open about yourself."
"It helps us think and learn about those sensitive topics that teachers don't really talk about."
"I like how YOW helped me discover that more people are like me."
"I think it's great that you all are doing this. People are usually scared to talk about "sensitive topics" but its great to have groups like this."
"I think the presenters were all great and nonjudgmental."
