18 x 12 inches on poster paper - pencilwork by Reyhan A. Garcia
English translation: "The Easy Way Is Killing Our World"
The imagery of the fish skeleton (upper left) represents the newer impacts of AI-driven data centers. These often use water from surrounding ecosystems to cool computer systems; afterwards, if the water is ever returned, aqueous life is exposed to dangerously heated water that can be fatal. The cracked earth (bottom left) and sick trees (bottom right) show what happens when the water never makes it back to nature.
The fossil fuel power plant (top left) reminds us that AI is often powered by environmentally damaging power sources that contribute to climate change. This is why the ragged butterfly and falling petals (middle left) highlight the fragility of AI’s potential. AI has already shown extraordinary promise in environmental research and protection. The artist hopes that humanity will choose to move forward with conscientious AI collaboration so that potential for good is fulfilled. There must be accountability for organizations, action by the people, and accessibility to AI literacy education. The light reflected in the eye reminds us there is always hope if we take initiative today.
