Our program uses the popular A-thon Method to raise money. The A-thon Method is a fundraiser where participants ask their family and friends to pledge a certain amount of money per minute or distance someone completes. For example, a person could be involved read-a-thon, basketball shoot-a-thon, or walk-a-thon. Donors are free to pledge or give a flat donation. In this case we are not using a physical activity, we have created a mental activity… A Youth Code-A-Thon. Students will participate in a 60-minute code-a-thon.
To get ready for the Code-A-Thon, our team comes to your school and hosts a coding and programming Boot Camp. Your student will learn the basics of coding using drones, Sphero, Legos, robots, and other technologies. While attending the Boot Camp students are preparing for the code-a-thon. The goal of the code-a-thon is to teach students how to code by introducing them to a variety of programming languages.
As the students are learning how to code, we are also assisting them in their public speaking and communication skills. Students will discuss what they are learning about coding and programming to their parents, family, and friends. Students will also develop a pitch to involve their families and friends in the code-a-thon. Students are given a script to modify and use when asking for pledges from family and friends.
The goal is for each student to raise $60 in pledges. The goal is to have someone pledge a $1 for every minute that the student is coding during the code-a-thon. All monies are collected before the code-a-thon. The money is collected electronically through Zelle or Paypal (youthcodeathon@gmail.com).
The program is a true win for everyone. The school raises necessary funds, students are exposed to coding and programming, and our young technology leaders have an opportunity to work with amazing teachers, administrators, parents, and fabulous kids. There is not an out of pocket cost for the school, PTO or students. Funding for the program is generated by the program.
