This year I was lucky enough to snag a Sunday ticket for the Glasgow Coffee Festival for the first time! As a coffee lover and barista of 3 years now, it was ridiculous I hadn't already attended. The festival was filled with local and surrounding coffee roasteries, bakers, milk suppliers & more! The coffee culture in Glasgow is truly amazing and I had an incredible time chatting to the people behind some of my favourite coffee shops & roasters such as Spitfire, Hinba, Parallel Coffee, Dear Green, Spider Monkey and so many more.
I attended an espresso workshop hosted by Adam from Parallel Coffee, I had great fun hearing his personal experience and extensive knowledge. My notes app was filled with so many tips from Adam, aswell as from 3-year coffee champion Luca Croce discussing his award winning V60 method. To anyone who hasn't attended yet, I highly recommend giving it a go next year, it's worth every penny.
Coffee room is a lovely little cafe facing a canal, just a short walk from the city centre. Their coffee was delicious, we went with two iced lattes with varied milk & flavourings. Both being well proportioned, with a balanced sweetness. I ordered a cheese croissant, and my friend a pain au chocolat, both were soft, however we were not offered a heated option, so the cheese was a little tough.
Staff were reserved but attentive, and they helped us decide which syrups to go with. The atmosphere is warm and quiet, a perfect spot for a coffee date or study session. Overall coffee room is a positive experience, however I wouldn’t be running back for the food alone.
The breakfast club is a local cafe to the hotel we stayed at in Amsterdam, so naturally it became part of our morning routine. I start my mornings with the humble flat white, so this was my daily order. Their espresso quality was consistently high, it being a classic medium roast with chocolatey notes, however I was at times disappointed with the quality of milk, with it tending to be on the foamier side.
The staff were absolutely lovely and I had some great chats with the baristas about working in tourist-heavy areas and showing eachother our latte art. Shameless, but no barista I know can turn down that opportunity. The atmosphere was calm, and filled with lively conversations with friends & loved ones. Overall a great spot if you’re missing that homey feeling, as their team are sure to provide good chat and laughs.
CAFECITO was the first stop we made after checking into our hotel. Their Strawberry Matcha display drew us in and it was worth every cent. This cafe reminded me a lot of some speciality coffee shops back in Glasgow, and the quality matched it. Specialising in Matcha & seasonal drinks, we tried the Strawberry Matcha, Red Velvet Latte, and a double espresso (to quench the barista thirst).
Their matcha was ceremonial-grade, and the strawberry syrup tasted exactly like strawberry jam, which I am obsessed with. My friend tried their Red Velvet latte which was lightly sweet, cakey and was overall an exciting flavour combination with their espresso. The customer service was polite, and attentive, they discussed their coffee’s orgin; Brasil, and favourite flavour combinations, which is always a lovely addition to the experience.
So good we brought some home! Kaffeteria is a lovely standalone shop a stone-throw away from Queens Street Station in Glasgow. As well as where I met one of my best friends, their coffee is a roast made by THOMSONS (yum!) for their store only. 'The Vale Blend' is from Brazil Paraiso and Columbia Suarez with tasting notes of milk chocolate, praline & caramel. Overall the selection of coffee's and bar drinks is really impressive for a small shop like this, the customer service is relaxed and friendly, and it is evident how much care they put into their quality of work.
Spitfire is one of my favourite go-to-coffee shops, it's inspired by the owners lover of planes and the entire store is curated to embody their era. Their iconic Gunnerbean roast is 70% Brazilian & 30% Columbian, with sweet notes of chocolate and nuts. I also ordered a flat white which had perfect texture and lovely latte art. Their food selection was limited but varied, I had a halloumi sandwich which was pretty decent. Their customer service was friendly and I always have a great chat with the bar staff, overall a lovely experience that I'll always recommend.
