Holding Sticks / Kick Drum Technique
Aim for the main grip to between thumb and first finger and wrap your back fingers around the end of the stick.
You can change between palms face the floor (German grip) and palms face together (French grip).
German grip is better for wrist movements, French is better for finger control.
For kick drum technique we checked out the differences between playing heel down and heel up.
1) Heel Down. Feels more natural at first, and you use your ankle twist to move the pedal.
2) Heel Up. You lift your knee and use your whole leg to push the pedal down.
Both of these are useful, heel down is quicker but quieter. Heel up is more powerful.
Coordination & First Grooves
There are two main moves that hold a lot of different grooves together. The basic steps are:
1) Hi Hat (Right Hand) and Kick Drum together.
2) Hi Hat (Right Hand) and Snare Drum (Left Hand) together.
Once you have the hang of these two moves there are so many other things that can be played between them.
We played a thing called 'Countdown To Rock Groove' where you practise 4, 3, 2, then 1 of each move.
Playing Drum Fills
Drum fills are a chance to play short phrases around the drum kit.
They often link sections of songs together.
We played R L R L twice as a short fill on snare then floor tom (tom 3)
And this concludes the example of a lesson recap ! 🥁👊🔥
