A typical DAW workshop

During the Workshop

The hands-on part of the workshop typically lasts 3 hours and can be followed by optional presentations by people with disabilities.

During the 3 hours, students spend their time in 3 different activity areas. They are, the hidden disabilities room (Hearing and speech, vision, learning differences and Autism) and the mobilities room (Fine motor, wheelchairs, prosthetics, and Activities for daily living and restricted movement) During the third hour the students assess their school for accessibility using a checklist and a tape measure and report their findings to their principal.

The students are assisted throughout the workshop by parent volunteers and volunteers from the CIL. All the volunteers learn from participating in the workshop along with the students.

The optional presentations can be planned to suit the individual school community. For example, there may be a local parent with a disability who wishes to share their experiences with the students. CIL volunteers and staff are also always willing to share their experiences with the students too.

After the workshop

The students reflect on their workshop experiences and complete their evaluations which are then returned to the CIL DAW team.
