In order to make my project possible, I collaborated with expert speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists in the field.

About Me
My name is Lauren, and I’ve been a Girl Scout since I was in kindergarten, and I’m now working towards achieving the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn—The Gold Award. My Gold Award aims to address the lack of neurodiverse support in our community. I’ve explored two categories: communication supports and sensory supports.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) consists of communication devices, systems, strategies, and tools that replace or support natural speech. With AAC, some will be able to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings more effectively. When we can clearly communicate, we can live more fulfilling lives.
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects how an individual’s brain processes sensory information or stimuli. Sights, smells, sounds, and movements can add to that feeling of overwhelm and overload. All individuals have varied sensory thresholds, these supports allow all individuals to have meaningful participation in library activities.
These books, which focus on wide-ranging topics about neurodiverse conditions and often come from the perspectives of neurodiverse authors, help everyone understand their experiences. This can foster understanding, compassion, and empathy.
