INFORMATICS IN HEALTHCARE REQUIRED READING REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT
SPRING 2020
1. Which article did you choose and why?
The article I chose was the barcoding article, titled, “Next-Gen barcoding advances quality of care.” I chose this article because I have always had an interest in the technology involved in the nursing field and the fact that it is constantly evolving in order to benefit the patients to the greatest ability possible. This article, to me, seemed not only interesting to read about, but something that can be useful for my future career as a nurse to know.
2. Summarize the article and key points.
This article is mainly about how barcoding usage in hospitals can decrease the amount of errors that may occur. Although this is true and there is data to show that proper usage of barcoding prevents hospital errors, it’s also stated that this technology needs to be expanded beyond medication administration into all other areas of the hospital, from the patient room to the lab to the pharmacy. This article also states that safe labeling practices provide an essential foundation for the success of the barcoding system, including the proximity, readability, durability, multi-functionality, ease of use, speed/reliability, transportability, HIPAA compliance, streamlined integration, and scalability.
3. List one item that you learned and state how you could incorporate this item into your nursing student experience at Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public Health.
One thing that I learned from this article is that an error can occur at any point in the care delivery process between admission and discharge, so proper identification of the patients is critical at all times. As a student nurse, I will remember this information and remember to make sure that the right patient is identified for their proper procedures while being taken care of. In other words, I will incorporate the information I had learned from this article in my student nursing experience by recalling that proper patient identification is crucial, so I will constantly check on the patients being cared for, making sure that they are the correct patient and receive the necessary care and medication while being treated by the healthcare professional.
4. Rating the information provided in this article on a scale of 0-10, with 0 being not informative at all, what rating would you give this article and why?
The information provided in this article was very informative, so I would rate it as a 10. I chose this rating because the data is shows regarding the importance of properly identifying patients using the next gen barcoding technology is useful information to know as a nurse. Ensuring the safety of the patient and giving them the proper care they need is crucial, so knowing that there is this technology available for use to decrease errors is very informative.
