As we step into the final stretch of the academic year, it’s game time! With Reading STAAR scheduled for April 8 and Math STAAR on April 23, our focus now shifts to purposeful preparation and intentional instruction. The work you’ve done so far has laid a strong foundation now it’s time to sharpen those skills and ensure every student is confident and ready to show what they know.
To support you in this countdown, here are some optional strategies you can keep in mind as you are delivering your Phase 2 SIP instruction.
Monday: Model with Meaning
Use think-alouds to break down STAAR-styled questions. Model metacognitive strategies aloud, showing students how to approach complex tasks step by step.
Tuesday: Targeted Tutoring
Use small group or one-on-one sessions to reteach missed TEKS based on data from CBAs or Interim Assessments. Keep it tight, targeted, and timely.
Wednesday: Writing to Win
Incorporate constructed response practice and short writing tasks in both ELA and Math. Show students how to justify answers and explain their thinking.
Thursday: Test-Taking Tools
Reinforce strategies like annotating questions, eliminating answer choices, and checking work. Consider “strategy of the week” challenges to keep students engaged.
Friday: Finish Line Friday
Build stamina through mini-assessments or STAAR simulations. Allow time to review and celebrate growth. Make it fun turn progress into a game or a team challenge!
