On June 30 I was invited to the very special birthday for Over Fifty, now Ninety, supermodel Daphne Selfe in London England. A few years back, a friend and Fashion Over Fifty model, Irene Smallwood-Bosma, and I decided to take a newly formed modeling class given by the world famous British model, Daphne. Irene was interested in the modeling aspect, and I was interested because I work with models. To receive our Certificates of Completion, Irene and I were invited to London for Tea with Daphne and her gorgeous daughter Claire. Since then, the modeling class has continued to grow and all models who finished the class were invited. Never to turn down an opportunity to celebrate a birthday of someone so special, I planned a vacation around this occasion.. The party was held in the Covent Garden area of London at the Century Club

"Everyone goes home quicker. I know what I'm doing, I suppose. It's not like shooting with some young girl." As the world's oldest working model, with a career spanning 69 years, she's certainly got the experience.

Considering that many models today are household names with personal brands worth millions and agents to negotiate what types of work they will or won't do, it's fair to say that Selfe comes from another world. It is all the more remarkable, then, that she has adapted to the industry now. The egos, she says simply, were a lot smaller back then.

When Daphne married Jim Smith in 1954, her career slowed down. By the time she considered fashion again it was the 1960s, she had three young children, and ideals were changing ("I was not appropriate to the '60s, it was Twiggy's turn," she says). Daphne continued doing commercials, some artistic modelling and worked as an extra in theatre and television.

"When I started you had to go around to the photographers with your portfolio to see if they liked you. I lost jobs when I was younger, by saying no [to advances]. I didn't care. I was quite a strong young person to always say no. Perhaps for people who needed the money it was a more difficult situation to be in."

Does she think progress has been made, in diversity at least? "I don't encourage the models who are too fat, or too thin, because both of those are bad for health. But it's brilliant to see different ages, skin tones, disabilities, everything being accepted, yes."

She says there wasn't such a focus on having "vital statistics" when she started out. She weighed 64 kilograms, was happy and healthy. "Most models were probably aged 30. I was a young one," she notes. "I don't think teenagers should be in it; they're far too young and their figures aren't developed."

After her PhD, Koller did postdoctoral research at University of California, Berkeley from 1993 to 1995 under Stuart J. Russell,[12] and joined the faculty of the Stanford University computer science department in 1995. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2004. She was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2011 for contributions to representation, inference, and learning in probabilistic models with applications to robotics, vision, and biology. She was also elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014 and as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023.[13]

She left Coursera in 2016 to become chief computing officer at Calico.[15] In 2018, she left Calico to start and lead Insitro, a drug discovery startup.[16] The company operates an automated lab equipment running on algorithms that use its own in vitro disease models.[17] The process allows the combination of machine learning and genomics to predict as well as test treatments for diseases.[17]

VETERAN model Daphne Selfe has a few things to say about her younger counterparts. At 87, Selfe is old enough to remember the early days of modelling, when models were taught decorum - something she feels is missing these days.

Her critique did not stop there. As well as decrying that models were no longer required to learn to walk with books balancing on their heads, she also questioned why they no longer took their jackets off half way down the catwalk, as they used to do, reports The Times - although arguably this is more a comment on the creative direction, than a model's lack of talent.

Selfe does have an answer to the problems she talked about though - her online academy, that would equip models with the necessary tools: "We would show them the right way to go about things," she said. "It would give the young models confidence."

But while we are all now aware that we should not send our clothes to landfill, it seems the fashion industry is still intent on treating its models as eminently disposable. Which is why Daphne is such a great figurehead (and body) for this campaign about longevity, and making women who are not, for whatever reason, inclined to shop in La Perla feel included.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) has been defined as elevated mean arterial pressure > 25mmHg at rest assessed by right heart catheterization, although the limit has been lowered to 20 mmHg for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). There are 5 different sub-categories of PH defined in the medical literature. Dr. Merkus has developed swine models for two of these sub-categories: type II PH induced by pulmonary vein stenosis and chronic thromboembolism induced PH (CTEPH).

Dr. Merkus developed in collaboration with CNIC-Madrid, a swine model of PVS to investigate the role of Endothelin and exercise in this disease. In their model, young 10 kg pigs have a band placed around the Pulmonary vein that will become constrictive once the animal grows. 4 weeks later, the animals are fully instrumented with ultrasonic flow probes and pressure catheters, with flow probes around the PA and the LAD and pressure catheter in the thoracic aorta. After surgical recovery, the animals are exercise trained from weeks 5-12. In this period, the animal grows to about 60kg and PVS resulting in PAH develops. This model leads to significant right ventricle remodeling and pulmonary microvascular remodeling, measured by increased wall/lumen ratio that is more pronounced in the lower airways. The result of this is an increased maximal constriction but with a reduced sensitivity to Endothelin.

Throughout the webinar, Dr. Merkus took time to answer questions from the audience and she followed up by email on several that were not discussed live. If this blog or the webinar raised questions, you are welcome to reach out to Dr. Merkus via daphne.merkus@med.uni-muenchen.de.

As Ms. Gilman said, girls can do anything. But they need to have role models and Daphne & Velma are another opportunity for girls to see they can do whatever they want. The movie is set in the same style as a traditional Scooby-Doo cartoon, but modernized with a can-do girl-power cast. If you are a fan of Scooby-Doo and want to introduce these strong female role models to your kids, pick up a copy of the Daphne & Velma movie from Amazon for under $18! Check out the decryptor and soundboard then enter to win a copy!

Danfeng "Daphne" Yao, a computer science professor at Virginia Tech, wants to improve the prediction accuracy of machine-learning models in medical applications. Her research findings were recently published in Communications Medicine, a selective open-access journal from Nature Portfolio.

The business model at Plant Grow Eat is a take on the worker cooperative model, but is more didactic in its early stages. Dillon, whose PhD studies were focused on the implementation of similar projects, provides the land and initial capital injection and trains the youth running it on how to build and make it profitable. Over time, the profits are utilized to provide the workers with a salary and to pay back the investment capital, interest-free, at which point full ownership is handed over to the young people who worked to build it. Over the past five years, the project has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local village in which it is based, helping it to independently lift itself out of poverty. be457b7860
