Does single motherhood during pregnancy adversely affect infant health? We contribute to the literature by 1) distinguishing between legal marital status and cohabitation, 2) identifying the duration of cohabitation during pregnancy to control for the intensity of single motherhood, and 3) addressing endogenous selection into cohabitation. We use the exogenous variation in cohabitation status due to marriageable age laws and the reform of the laws as instrumental variables. The results show that most of the observed cohabitation premium is driven by positive selection into cohabitation. We also found little marriage premium for birth outcomes.
