Appleton is situated within Outagamie and Calumet counties of Wisconsin. The city is one of the Fox Cities can be found on the Fox River, approximately 30 miles (48km) southwest of Green Bay. It is located 100 miles (160km) north of Milwaukee. Appleton is the county seat of Outagamie County. Appleton was the sixth largest municipality in Wisconsin according to the census of 2020. Census. After several years of talks between Menominee, Ho-Chunk and the federal government on how to deal with the Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee tribes that were relocated from New York to Wisconsin, the treaty was signed. Since only the Menominee had given up land, the Ho-Chunk didn't ratify the final agreement. Appleton is located in Menominee is known as Ahkonemeh or "watches to their spot".

Appleton's first European colonists were traders from the fur trade who wanted to conduct business within the Fox River Valley with Native Americans. The White Heron was built by Hippolyte Grignon in the year 1835 to serve as an accommodation for his family. It is also an inn and trading post.

Appleton was founded in 1847. Appleton was initially three villages that were not incorporated on the Fox River. They included Grand Chute (south to north) and Appleton (north). Lawrence was also a financial supporter of Lawrence University. It was originally known as the Lawrence Institute. Samuel Appleton, Lawrence’s father-in law from New England, gave $10,000 to the college's newly-established library. The town was named after him.

Appleton's growth has been driven by the paper industry since 1853 , when Appleton built its first mill for paper. The first national hydroelectric central station located on the Fox River, the Vulcan Street Plant was built to supply electricity to the paper manufacturing industry. It was inaugurated on September 30th 1882. The power plant was powered by the Hearthstone House, which was the first house to be powered by an Edison-based centrally situated hydroelectric station.
