WORKING PAPERS
Recent Marriage and Labor Supply Pattern of Young Chinese Women (with Jeonghwan Yun)
In this paper, we examine the impact of a sibling gender on educational attainment, earnings, family formation for a recent cohort of women in China. Family characteristics such as number of siblings, sibling gender composition, and parents’ characteristics may play an important role in children’s life as the presence of a sibling can affect parents’ treatment of the remaining children. Especially male siblings can affect children’s outcome through various pathways as male sibling may pull parental investment of resources away from girls, because boys may be seen as the “higher return” investment (Becker, 1991). We investigate the effect of having a (male) sibling on a daughter by exploiting the change in fertility trend in China induced by the One Child Policy (OCP).
The Effects of Teacher Performance Measures on Student Achievement [Job Market Paper] [Submitted]
As of 2019, 34 states require objective measures of student achievement growth in teacher evaluation. By exploiting nationwide data and the difference in timing of the policy adoption across states and districts, I find that adopting the Student Growth Measures (SGMs) decreases students' math scores, and the impact becomes more prominent with time. This unexpected adverse effect of the policy is driven by the deterioration among previously high-performing districts and schools. Furthermore, by exploring the policy of providing Value-Added (VA) measures to teachers on student performance in Ohio, I find that the distribution of students' performance shifted downward in schools with VA policy, suggesting that VA is detrimental to high-performing students. These results show that SGMs have unintended effects on student achievement, undermining the performance of students at the top end of the distribution.
Early Exposure to Drinking Culture and Impact on Educational Attainment [Draft Coming Soon]
This paper examines the effects of teen drinking on educational attainment. I first empirically examine the peer effect on young adults' drinking behavior by evaluating the strength of peer group influences on the consumption of alcohol by young adults. By using the regression discontinuity design and comparing the drinking incidence between individuals with different eligibility to drink, I find that having a peer who has legal access to alcohol leads to an increase in alcohol consumption among the people who are not eligible to drink. However, this underage drinking does not harm the ultimate level of post-secondary education level. The estimate results indicate that there may be small effects on early college dropout behavior. This negative impact on educational attainment fades away, as shown by outcomes measured at older ages.
Studying Under Influence: Does Recreational Marijuana Legalization Adversely Affect Students' Educational Outcomes? (with Christian Gunadi and Hanbyul Ryu)
In recent years, there are increasing efforts to legalize marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. It is still unclear, however, how this policy would affect the student performances. In this paper, we exploit the passage of Recreational Marijuana Laws (RML) to investigate the effect of expanding access to marijuana on students’ educational outcomes in Colorado and Washington. Although the use of marijuana increased substantially following the passage for RML, we do not find evidence that college enrollment rates, high school dropout rates, and 8th-grade students’ mathematics and reading scores were adversely affected by the legalization.
