This project explores the field of data sonification. I have been a musician all my life and have played multiple instruments. Before entering the Master's in Integrated Design and Media program at NYU, I worked in the fields of finance and analytics. This background inspired me to combine data analysis, visualization, and music, leading to the idea of a thesis on data sonification.
Data sonification involves creating sound from datasets. Similar to data visualization, it perceptualizes datasets, but through sounds. Data sonification has been utilized by numerous artists and scientists, including for accessibility purposes for visually impaired individuals, as well as for artistic purposes and as background music for space-related data (since there is no sound in space, NASA uses data sonification extensively). This project was initially inspired by a TED talk by an astrophysicist at NASA.
This project was completed from January to May 2024.
