On 3rd May 2024, The Human Rights Hub hosted a special event lecture to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, featuring Raphael Rashid. As a freelance journalist based in Seoul, Raphael Rashid has made significant contributions to renowned publications like The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Nikkei Asia, and the New York Times. His insights and experiences shared during this lecture provided a unique and valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of South Korea’s Media landscape, thereby enriching our knowledge of the media’s role in human rights issues.
On the day when South Korea fell from 47th to 62nd place in the Annual Global Press Freedom Index, discussing press freedom and the media environment within the country seemed crucial. If South Korea has been one of East Asia's most open environments for press freedom, its press environment is deteriorating. In an increasingly self-censored and censored environment, it is crucial to prioritize quality reporting and fact-checked media. In a climate where factual inaccuracies, plagiarism and unethical reporting practices occur, we ought, as media customers, to be curious and keep an open mind when seeking and understanding original sources.
