On October 2, The International Day of Non-Violence is observed annually as the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian leader who championed the philosophy of non-violence. The United Nations General Assembly established this day through Resolution A/RES/61/271 on June 15, 2007. The day reaffirms the message of non-violence universally through education and public awareness, desiring to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.
This observance demonstrates the significance of non-violence in human rights violations worldwide. Despite continuous international efforts, violence remains as a crucial barrier to the realization of human rights. Approximately 30% of women have been subjected to physical and sexual violence by their partner, non-partner or both according to the World Health Organization . The emergency need for global action to combat violence and promote human rights is reflected through this statistics.
Violence addressing involves numerous challenges for global communities. Implementing solutions against perpetuating violence cycle often becomes difficult for conflicts, political instability and entrenched cultural norms. Additionally, protecting individual's rights get hindered for inadequate and weak enforcement of legal frameworks. To safeguard human rights and promote peace, a concerted effort is required from governments, civil society and international organizations to create and enforce laws that overcome these obstacles.
Several international programs and resolutions have been established for years in response to these challenges. The significance of non-violence in achieving peace and human rights is emphasized on Culture of Peace by The United Nations Declaration and Programme. Moreover, UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 provides access to justice for all by building accountable institutions and promoting peaceful as well as inclusive societies. These initiatives have accelerated tangible outcomes involving states peace missions, human rights education and violence reduction policies.
By advocacy and philanthropy, celebrities like BTS have amplified the message of non-violence and human rights. BTS has partnered with UNICEF by the LOVE MYSELF campaign since 2017; raising over $6.6 million to support UNICEF’s initiatives to end violence against children, promote self-esteem and well-being. BTS has also shown support against racial discrimination by donating $1 million to the Black Lives Matter movement and condemning anti-Asian hate crimes. Through these initiatives, BTS has been contributing to global awareness of non-violence and human rights that reinforce the principles commemorated on this day.
The International Day of Non-Violence reminds the world about the present struggles for human rights and the necessity of non-violent actions to resolve conflicts. This day commemorates understanding and respect for human rights worldwide by reinforcing the commitment to a culture of peace.
