Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute

각막이상증연구소(The Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute)는 연세대학교 의과대학에 속한 의과대학부설 연구소로 2006년 3월 1일 설립하였습니다. 연구소는 안과학적 유전질환 중 유병율이 높고, 실명에 이를 수 있는 제2형 과립형 각막이상증(Granular Corneal Dystrophy type 2)을 비롯하여 다양한 각막이상증에 대한 기초 및 임상연구를 수행하고 있으며, 발생 기전을 규명하고 더욱 효과적인 진단 및 치료법의 개발을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

이를 위해 연구소에서는 각막에 발생하는 질환 및 안구 표면에서의 생리 작용을 알아내기 위해 기초 및 임상 연구를 병행하여 치료 약물과 수술법을 개발하고 그 효과를 검증하고자 하며, 그를 위해 외부 대학 및 외부 연구소와의 공동 연구도 진행하고 있습니다.

아울러, 연구원을 중심을 학생, 전공의, 대학원생의 교육과 관련 분야의 종사자들 간에 학문적 교류 및 상호 협력 관계를 이룩하기 위해 외국의 우수한 연구소나 유사한 기관들과 유대 관계를 갖고, 연구 활동, 상호 정보 교환 및 필요에 따라서 단기 연수 또는 초청을 하여 연구 수행에 도움이 될 수 있도록 협조 체계를 구축하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

The Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute, affiliated with the Yonsei University College of Medicine, was established on March 1, 2006. The institute is dedicated to conducting both basic and clinical research on various corneal dystrophies, including Granular Corneal Dystrophy Type 2, a hereditary ophthalmic disorder with a high prevalence that may lead to blindness. Its primary objective is to elucidate the pathogenesis of these conditions and to develop more effective diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.

To this end, the institute undertakes comprehensive basic and clinical investigations into corneal diseases and ocular surface physiology, with the aim of developing novel pharmacological treatments and surgical techniques, as well as validating their efficacy. Furthermore, the institute actively engages in collaborative research endeavors with external universities and research institutions.

Additionally, the institute strives to support the education of students, residents, and graduate scholars, while fostering academic exchange and collaborative relationships among professionals in related fields by maintaining ties with leading international research centers and similar institutions, and by facilitating joint research activities, information exchange, and, when necessary, short-term training programs or visiting scholar invitations to promote effective research collaboration.
