We are a registered non-profit Chinese martial arts (aka Kung Fu or Wushu) club that began in the Town of Peace River, Alberta in the summer of 2006 and currently operates in Calgary's NW teaching classes for all ages 9+.
What we Teach
Our curriculum covers skills for amateur competition, recreation and self defense divided in following components:
Traditional Chinese martial arts based on northern style Tian Shan Pai (天山派), Song Xingyi Quan (形意拳) & Changquan (長拳).
Self defense based on Chinese military Gedou (格斗).
Striking and throwing techniques from sport Sanda.
Traditional Chinese martial arts in general are very comprehensive as they include Da (To Strike, 打), Ti (To Kick, 踢), Shuai (To Wrestle, 摔), Na (To Seize, 拿) and Wuqi (weapons training, 武器) . A typical class includes:
Warm Ups
Stretching
Break falls
Conditioning
Partner drills
Pad and focus mitts work
Solo and partner routines with and without weapons (Taolu)
Fighting applications from the routines
Self defense techniques
Light sparring with protective gear & under supervision
Chinese wrestling
What does Yongshi Mean?
Our logo is composed of two characters. Yong (勇) = brave, courageous, fierce. Shi (士) = scholar, gentleman, soldier. Yongshi (勇士) = a warrior / a brave person. It also includes a dragon, unlike the western perception associated with negative features; for the Chinese is the completely opposite as the dragon represents wisdom, auspicious powers, strength etc.
Required Training Gear
After the trial class and if you are still interested you will need a set of shin guards and punching gloves. Typically boxing gloves are adequate for sport Sanda, however for military style Gedou, traditional class and Self Defense MMA style gloves are also required. After 3 months of practice students are required to buy a club t-shirt and black kung fu pants if in the traditional program. For Sanda/Self defense class, club t-shirt and MMA or Sanda shorts are also required.
Anyone interested can contact us via email to set up a free trial lesson.
