Register for Driver Education at the Yujo Community Center!
Be at least 16 years old and obtain a USFJ 4EJ Student Driver Permit: To obtain a 4EJ, new drivers must attend the Wing’s Weekly Drivers Course briefing, typically held on Thursdays (with the exception of Federal holidays); it is instructed by the 374th SFS & 374th Wing Safety office). The course is offered at the A&FRC as part of the Newcomer’s Orientation.
Driver Education Classroom Instruction: AAA’s How to Drive Curriculum is available online. It takes 30 hours to complete, meeting the USFJ classroom instruction requirement as part of the 45 hours of aggregate instruction. The Nebraska state course has been selected based on its affordability ($40, as of January 2023 for non-AAA members), availability (at https://nebraska.aaadriverprogram.com/how-to-drive), and rigor. Students will present the instructor with a copy of their completion certificate to meet the in-class requirement.
20 Hours Driving With a Parent/Guardian/Other Fully Licensed Adult: All new drivers must drive 20 hours with a fully licensed driver as part of their overall driver education. Student drivers should do this concurrently with their in-car sessions with the certified instructor (see recommended sequence in Step 4). A Driver Record sheet can be obtained at the Yujo Community Center or by email request to yokotadrivered@gmail.com.
6 Hours In-Car Training with a Certified Instructor: Students can register for In-Car training at the Yujo Community Center (four 90-minute sessions, $360) once they register for the AAA course in Step 2. To register, they will be required to present their 4EJ learner’s permit (from Step 1) and proof of their online class registration (from Step 2) with them when they register. Once registered, students will be given access to an online scheduling system that allows them to select the times and days to meet the instructor. In-car lessons will start at the Yujo Community Center and will be conducted in the driver education vehicle. Students can register for the 6 hours of instruction any time after registering for the AAA online classroom instruction (a student does not need to wait to complete the online course—Steps 3 & 4 can begin once a student has completed Step 1 and started Step 2)
In-Car Lesson 1 with Certified Instructor: Recommended that the student have this lesson before they start driving with their parent/guardian.
In-Car Lesson 2: Recommended that this lesson takes place after driving 2 to 5 hours with parent/guardian.
In-Car Lesson 3: Recommended that this lesson takes place after driving 10-15 hours with parent/guardian.
In-Car Lesson 4/Final Test: REQUIRED that this final session with the certified instructor take place after Steps 2 and 3 have been successfully completed. Student drivers must bring with them to this lesson the certificate from the online classroom course indicating successful completion of the course, as well as a completed and signed driver record that shows a minimum of 20 hours practice with a licensed adult driver.
Upon successful completion of Steps 1-4 above, the Yujo Community Center will issue a certificate to the student indicating that they have met the USFJ’s classroom and driving requirements for new drivers. Students will then be able to take this certificate to Pass/ID at the Supply Gate where they will be issued a full 4EJ. Note: Drivers who are 16 and 17 years old will have an “On-Base Only” restriction on their license. New drivers 18 and over are required to drive on-base only for the first 30 days after receiving a new license before driving off base.
