Hello, I'm Yoji. All of my students call me "Yoji-sensei." The word sensei means "teacher" in Japanese, and it is how we address teachers here in Japan.

Once a day, I speak to them and ask if they need help on the street or in a shop. In many cases, they are having trouble reading Japanese menus and signs.

One day I thought about it: Why are all these people I help in the exact same touristy places?
As a Japanese person who speaks fluent Japanese and was also educated in Japan, I know there are much nicer places that locals go to in their daily lives. Most people who live in Tokyo do not visit those major tourist spots on a monthly basis. Instead, we know which restaurants or bars serve delicious, reasonably priced food in residential areas. We know where to buy fresh sushi, sashimi, or yakitori for dinner. We know the best dating spots and where kids actually want to go, including Pokémon Centers.

Movies, anime, and YouTubers are likely major influences. Japan and our culture are known worldwide for "diligent people," "clean cities," "great fresh food," and an "advanced lifestyle," and I am very proud of it. While this is true, since this is already our living standard, we locals know even better ways to experience the real Japan.

From my own childhood experience, I deeply understand how difficult it is to step into "the real local life" in a foreign country. Time spent living here may fly by when you look back, but I want you to truly experience the authentic Japanese way of living. Once your company decides to send you to Japan as an expat, you will have to figure out where to live, which schools your children should attend, how to find doctors or hospitals, how to navigate public transport, which apps make daily life easier, and which language schools to choose.

My Background

I was born in Japan and raised abroad, spending a total of eight years in both the US and the UK. That is where I learned to speak English and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. Looking back on my time overseas, I am reminded of the everyday struggles I faced—the language barrier, feelings of isolation at school, and the frustration caused by cultural differences.

I returned to Japan for university to study Comparative Culture at the University of Tsukuba, where I earned my teaching credentials for Japanese junior high and high schools. After graduating, I worked in the finance sector for many years at companies like Nomura Securities and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and 6 years ago I changed my profession to education. Currently, I teach English to Japanese children and adults, both in Tokyo and online.
