Quotations from Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi
"The whole evolution has taken place, as if like a seed sprouting. And now at this stage, if anything has to happen, has to be spontaneous. You cannot get it by reading, or by talking, or going to library, or by being a king or a big man somewhere. You get it by the happening within you."
Public Programme, Geneva, Switzerland, 1980.
"But actually in Sahaja Yoga, the practice of Sahaja Yoga is very different from any kind of meditation, of concentration or anything."
Public Programme, London, England, 1987.
“If we really want peace on this earth, if we want really progress for ourselves, if we want all kinds of physical, mental and emotional problems being solved, all for our good, why not we come to Sahaj Yog, where we don’t have to do anything except for raising our Kundalini, except for meditating for it, for very little time and to achieve that state of joy?”
Birthday Celebrations, Kolkata, India, 1994.
Awakening of the Kundalini
When Shri Mataji met groups of people, many Kundalinis became awakened. And some Kundalinis which were already active were strengthened. The Kundalini also responds to a photograph of Shri Mataji because her image emits a strong positive energy. So a photograph can be used to achieve a more evolved state. This may work more effectively in a group, whether physically together or online:
Sit comfortably, but not lazily, with an image of Shri Mataji in front of you. A little back support will help. If you choose to sit on the ground, then cross your legs but not in a half or full lotus position. Twisted positions create a physical strain for the body and do not help the process.
Have your hands relaxed and open, on your lap. Palms upwards and hands not touching each other. Close your eyes, as soon as you wish. Reopen them later if you feel uncomfortable or if the eyes seem to flicker or move quite a lot in their sockets. It is not necessary to focus on the image. For most people, sitting with the eyes closed is the most successful arrangement.
Sit quietly, without any focus or concentration. When you observe that thoughts are occurring, simply let them pass by and do not join in with any train of thought. For example, if you notice some thoughts about your breakfast, then do not start to think about your evening meal or about tomorrow's breakfast.
Do not try to stop thoughts occurring or feel annoyed by them. Do not use any meditation techniques which you may have tried before. Do not say any prayers or mantras or affirmations or use breathing exercises. If you experience any strong emotions, it may be helpful to open the eyes.
At the beginning, it will mainly be your physical body which is likely to start feeling more relaxed. After some time your mental activity should start to reduce. This quietening down of the thinking brain is helped by the action of the Kundalini, particularly when it has reached the top energy centre, quite high up in the brain. The sixth energy centre, at the level of the forehead, has some control over thinking. It should start to relax, after part of the Kundalini has passed through it.
When your thinking starts to reduce, you might notice that a thought is followed by a pause and then by another thought. Those pauses, or moments of silence, may elongate but you are likely to remain awake, not asleep and not in a trance. Meditation is not an activity to be performed. Rather, it is a state, which many people can achieve. For some time, you become relaxed and alert but without any thoughts, or with very few.
You may feel sensations of heat or coolness or tingles on your hands or in the body. There could also be feelings of tension, if some chakras are blocked.
Be patient. Kundalini Awakening is a living process and for some people it may not be swift or completely comfortable.
