Note: Professional sound level meters must comply with a host of acoustical and electrical tests to meet national and international standards. The NIOSH Sound Level Meter app has met the requirements of IEC 61672:3 (Periodic Testing) sound level meter standard when used with external calibrated microphone.

NIOSH establishes recommended exposure limits (REL) for various hazards on the basis of the best available science and practice. The REL for noise is 85 decibels, using the A-weighting frequency response an 8-hour average, usually referred to as time-weighted average (TWA). Exposures at or above this level are considered hazardous. OSHA sets legally-enforceable permissible exposure limit (PEL) that require employers to take actions to reduce worker exposures. The OSHA PEL for noise is 90 dBA as an 8-hr TWA based on a 5-dB exchange rate.

Occupational standards specify a maximum allowable daily noise dose, expressed in percentages. For example, a person continuously exposed to 85 dBA per NIOSH or 90 dBA per OSHA over an 8-hour work shift, will reach 100% of their daily noise dose. The noise dose is based on both the sound exposure level and how long it lasts (duration). This dose limit uses a 3-dB time-intensity tradeoff commonly referred to as the exchange rate or equal-energy rule: for every 3-dB increase in averaged noise exposure, the allowable exposure time is reduced by half. For example, if the exposure increases to 88 dBA, workers should only be exposed for four hours. Alternatively, for every 3-dB decrease in averaged noise exposure, the allowable exposure time is doubled, as shown in the figure below.

It is important to differentiate between noise level and time-weighted average noise exposure. While noise levels describe the intensity of sounds at a given point in time, the NIOSH exposure limits are set as time-weighted average exposures over periods of time. If noise level measurements consistently exceed 85 dBA, we recommend that you follow up with a professional such as an industrial hygienist or an occupational safety and health specialist to conduct a professional noise survey at your workplace. Remember, protecting your hearing is a good health practice no matter where your ears are!

iOS devices share common hardware and software architecture that is optimized for audio applications. Therefore, we have been able to verify that the NIOSH SLM app will perform as expected on any iOS device. On the other hand, the Android device marketplace is fragmented among many manufacturers with different requirements and specifications for microphones, audio/signal processing chips, and software tools. I thought this was interesting so I wanted to experiment to see how much hit hip hop records changed when switching from normalized to not-normalized. I really just wanted to see if any engineers/mastering engineers are truly mixing to the standard spotify recommends being -14 LUFS.

So I went further and bought/downloaded the high-quality files to see where these masters are really hitting. I was surprised to see many were hitting up to -7 LUFS and maybe the quietest being up to -12 on average. And those quieter songs being mixed by Alex Tumay who is known for purposely mixing quieter records to retain dynamics.

But at the end of the day, It doesn't seem anyone is really abiding by "LUFS" rules by any means. I'm curious what your opinions are on this? I wonder if many streaming services give the option spotify does to listen to audio the way artists intended in the future.

As phones and technology get better and better each year it would only make sense for streaming platforms to give better quality audio options to consumers and listen at the loudness they prefer. I'm stuck on whether normalization will or will not be the future. If it isn't the future, then wouldn't it make sense to mix to your preferred loudness to better "future proof" your mixes? Or am I wrong and normalization is the way of the future?

In determining whether a standard threshold shift has occurred, allowance may be made for the contribution of aging (presbycusis) to the change in hearing level by correcting the annual audiogram according to the procedure described in appendix F: Calculation and Application of Age Correction to Audiograms.

In receiver-based setups, one can always generate a test tone on a channel-by-channel basis and, if desired, set the speaker level using a sound pressure meter. I use the test tones to make sure everything is connected and then after running room correction software (Truplay for us), I run the test tones again with a SPM to make sure the levels are reasonable.
