What happened during the encounter: Ineffectual himself and surrounded by advisers with conflicting opinions, al-Mustaʿṣim presented no strong defense against the Mongol conqueror Hülegü, grandson of Genghis Khan. Al-Mustaʿṣim ignored several demands of Hülegü and answered others with blustering and empty threats. Finally Hülegü laid siege to Baghdad in 1258 and entered the city in February of that year. The caliph and 300 officials hurried to present their surrender and, 10 days later, were all put to death.

My name is Mustasim, a caliph of Baghdad. My nation is completely destrouyed by the Mongols under the rule of Hulego, the grandson of Genghis Khan. The Mongols destroyed my nation's treasure, the knowledge sources and the libraries. The Mongols send me many demands and letters to conqueor my nation. I don't know what to reply back for these letters and demands. But the Mongols thinks I ignored theie letters and they conquered my nation and destroyed my nation. My nation is completely destroyed by the Mongols. I send them back some letters but they think I send back many empty threats. But then later, the Mongols come to conquer my nation.
