I am collaborating with colleagues in Japanese theater and Korean performance to organize two conferences in AY 2024-25 and AY 2025-26.
The conferences stem from my interest in the spatial structure of theatrical imagination, the relationship between performing and placemaking, and the critical examination of media history. We aim to bring together scholars of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature, performance, and history whose work engages with these latest trends, with the goal of catalyzing productive conversations that will lead to new interdisciplinary and transcultural understandings of the early modern experience.
With the aim to bridge research, teaching, and performance practices, we are organizing performance events in conjunction with the conferences that invite performers in Asia and the Los Angeles community to engage with students, scholars, and general audiences.
Performance events 2024-25:
The Appreciation of Kunqu Opera, The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, October 10, 2024
The Jade Hairpin, Schoenberg Hall, October 12, 2024
Peking Opera Past and Present: A Conversation with Shi Yihong, February 19, 2025 (organized with Andrea Goldman)
