Whispers of Ashes

Whispers of Ashes explores Taoist notions of the interrelation between self and matter, together with the multiple dimensions of materiality in contemporary art. Using clay and ash as primary media, the work reveals the cyclical transformation of matter through processes of burning and regeneration. The ashes produced from burning branches and leaves are not mere remnants but new “earth,” carrying the traces of vegetal life and the memory of nature. In this sense, matter is no longer passive but embodies its own vitality and agency.

The earthen kilns constructed for Whispers of Ashes become sites of transformation. The shifting movement of fire and wind generates a meditative state, allowing an encounter with the spiritual dimension of matter. By gathering branches from the eight directions and burning them into ash and charcoal, the work weaves them into the Taoist system of the Bagua, expressing the dynamic interplay of yin and yang. At the same time, the minerals contained in the ash are fused into glazes and inscribed as words, transforming into monuments that hold the stories of plants.

Whispers of Ashes is both an attunement to the mutability of matter and a celebration of its generative force. It unfolds in the whispers of ashes, inviting viewers into a cyclical narrative of matter, memory, and time.
