In the Karangtengah inscription dated 824 AD, it is mentioned that King Indra had built a sacred building called Wenuwana, which means bamboo forest. This assumption is based on the fact that the temple has reliefs depicting events at `Vevuvana`, where Gautama Buddha taught Buddhism to king Ajaratasatru. By a Dutch archaeologist named J.G. de Casparis, this word was associated with Mendut Temple.

Temple Architecture. The actual building material of the temple is brick covered with natural stone. The building is located on a high ground floor, so it looks more graceful and sturdy. Stairs go up to the top and the entrance faces southwest. Above the basement is a passageway that surrounds the body of the temple. The roof is three-storied and decorated with small stupas. The number of small stupas installed now is 48. The height of the building is 26.4 meters.

Mendut Temple is a Buddhist temple built during the reign of King Indra of the Syailendra dynasty.

Another reference that can be used to determine the age of this temple is the existence of a short inscription - part of a Buddhist mantra - that was once found on the temple structure. It is likely that this inscription was originally placed above the chamber door. This inscription uses ancient script and has similarities with the inscriptions found at the foot of Borobudur, so it can be concluded that Mendut Temple was built during the same period as Borobudur, which is around the 8th and 9th centuries AD.
