This override is also about Holden’s ability to meet its obligations to the Wachusett Regional School District.
A growing share of local tax revenue is committed to school assessments and other fixed costs that the town cannot easily control. As those obligations rise, less remains for municipal services like the Library, Senior Center, public safety, and DPW.
Without new revenue, Holden will not be able to continue funding both its municipal services and the school district’s annual budget requests at current levels.
That creates difficult choices.
If the override fails, Holden will be about $1.2 million short on resources to fund the WRSD budget for next year and the Finance Committee will discuss recommending a NO vote at Town Meeting.
Security upgrades at Holden Elementary Schools will not be funded, including:
Emergency Communications Infrastructure needed for Police and Fire Departments to communicate reliably while in our elementary schools in the case of an emergency
Cost = $280,000 for all three schools - Dawson, Davis Hill, and Mayo
Security & Access Control System for Davis Hill Elementary needed to ensure controlled entry to keep kids and staff safe. This was already completed at Dawson and Mayo
Cost = $157,500 for Davis Hill
