Mariia Bezusa

I'm Maria. I'm a Ukrainian artist based in London. I like to create meaning and images with lines in free flight. The lines in my artworks are lines of thought, states, and choices that intertwine, creating a whimsical pattern of the present moment, which reveals itself anew. The portraits that I draw are different in that everyone sees them in their own way, through the prism of their feelings. Some people see the face as evil, others as virtuous, and at the same time, even I see it differently every time.

My life has been an extraordinary journey; I have travelled to more than 30 countries, on a quest to continuously explore diverse spaces and artistic expressions to inspire my creativity. I am an artistic chameleon, embracing a multitude of styles which allow expressing myself in different moments of vision.

My journey as a creator didn't start in childhood and wasn't straightforward. My father was an artist and a caricaturist. I have watched his creativity since childhood and thought I would never be talented enough to follow in his footsteps. Time passed, and when I lived in Bali, it's as if one of the local spirits of creativity inhabited me. I felt a sharp need for drawing; I drew day and night, and it became part of my life. Drawing often lifted me out of difficult situations and feelings of loss.

I'm from the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv. When the attack on Kyiv began, my family had to live in the tube station. The war in Ukraine left a strong mark on my life, and through the art I convey the emotions that war instils in Ukrainians so that those who haven't experienced it can at least for a moment feel the horror in which others live.

My mission is to kindle thoughts about the world, both the world within and the world outside, but also to evoke new universes filled with unique meanings. Some reflect my rebellious nature, sharp and sometimes even screaming, they call for change in the world. Some are magical and fairy-tale-like, opening doors to new meanings and new worlds beyond the limits of our own.
