Computers have always fascinated me. From finance to Facebook, algorithms are the hidden language that underlies most of our life. The largest transformations of our world are being written in code, and advancements in artificial intelligence allow us to use computers to understand what it means to be human.

This class teaches the basics of how to use computer algorithms to see, primarily under the context of guiding a robot to perform actions based on those images. Topics include binary image processing, edge detection, Gaussian extended surfaces, orientation and photogrammetry. The course was evaluated by two take home quizzes and counted as one of two graduate-level classes I took in the challenge.

It also includes an extensive discussion on one of the most important and unsolved problems in mathematics, whether P=NP, which would have profound implications for society depending on its answer and despite decades of work and a one million dollar prize for its solution, nobody has been able to answer it.

Keep in mind these are only the minimum requirements of my challenge. For classes which have a significant programming component, I try to do representative programming assignments, to the extent that this is possible.

Nobody likes studying, but everyone wants to be smart. Learning, getting to those insights and feeling smarter about a subject are immensely rewarding. Too bad many of us have forgotten this after years of punitive formal education.

I already have a career as a writer and small business owner. I never want to work for a large corporation, where HR might scrutinize over my lack of a diploma. For me, I just want to learn computer science in case I want to start a new business or work for a start-up.

No, but the difference is subtle. Most the classes build on past concepts, so my goal with each is to develop a deep understanding that I can leverage. Cramming is typically a resort to memorization to quickly pass a test then forget it. Understanding is harder, but not necessarily more time consuming (and a requirement if each class builds on the one before it).

Ultimately, my ability to comprehend and perform adequately on higher level classes will be the test of my method, since most freshman classes serve primarily as grounding for more difficult senior classes.

In December 2015, we launched our Smart City Challenge, asking mid-sized cities across America to develop ideas for an integrated, first-of-its-kind smart transportation system that would use data, applications, and technology to help people and goods move more quickly, cheaply, and efficiently. The Challenge generated an overwhelming response: 78 applicant cities shared the challenges they face and ideas for how to tackle them. Then, our seven finalists worked with DOT to further develop their ideas.

With the publication of our report, "Smart City Challenge: Lessons for Building Cities of the Future," we are making good on our promise to share the lessons we learned about the transportation challenges America's cities face and about the innovative solutions that could help us meet those those challenges.

By challenging American cities to use emerging transportation technologies to address their most pressing problems, the Smart City Challenge aimed to spread innovation through a mixture of competition, collaboration, and experimentation. But the Smart City Challenge was about more than just technology. We called on mayors to define their most pressing transportation problems and envision bold new solutions that could change the face of transportation in our cities by meeting the needs of residents of all ages and abilities; and bridging the digital divide so that everyone, not just the tech-savvy, can be connected to everything their city has to offer.

On September 2nd, the Biden-Harris Administration announced awards for 21 regional coalitions that were finalists in the Build Back Better Regional Challenge (BBBRC). This $1 billion grant competition, created through the American Rescue Plan Act, challenged communities to identify a set of interconnected investments that, together, could transform their local economy, expand economic opportunity and competitiveness, and create thousands of good jobs.

BBBRC awardees will each receive between $25 million and $65 million to fund 123 individual strategic projects to advance economic strategies benefiting 24 states. This federal funding is matched by more than $300 million of local investment and will leverage support from over 450 private sector and 27 labor unions or workers organizations.

These 21 coalitions were chosen from a highly competitive group of 60 finalists that each received $500,000 seed grants after being selected from 529 applicants. The selected portfolio represents the diversity of our nation and the belief that, with the right resources and opportunities, all communities can compete in the economy of the future.

EDA funded two investments designed to explore, document, and disseminate the lessons, outcomes, and replicable models of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge, helping amplify its impact beyond the regional coalitions awarded federal funding. The workforce partnerships will serve 32 states and territories focusing on 15 targeted industries that are essential to U.S. global competitiveness and supply chain resiliency, including healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing and include 829 commitments from employers to support the programs. Ultimately, the program is projected to place more than 50,000 American workers into good, quality jobs.

The Good Jobs Challenge highlights workforce development as key to accelerating local economic growth and rebuilding regional economies so they are more resilient to future challenges, while providing good job opportunities for American workers to achieve economic mobility and security.

On August 3, 2022, EDA announced awards to 32 industry-led, worker-centered training partnerships and systems across the country, which will impact 31 states and Puerto Rico. These workforce partnerships are providing tangible opportunities and security for American workers and connecting employers with the trained workforce they need to grow and maintain competitive economies.

The awardees funded by the Good Jobs Challenge expand opportunities across diverse populations, regions, and communities, focusing on coordinated and comprehensive approaches to removing systemic barriers for workers through support services such as childcare and transportation, and opening doors to a variety of paid on-the-job training opportunities.

The State of Missouri received $1.7 billion through the Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program to bring service to all Missourians that lack access to reliable broadband. The goal of the BEAD State Challenge Process is to improve the Missouri Broadband Map so that the Office of Broadband Development (OBD) has the most accurate map possible to use to make funding decisions.

Through the Missouri Broadband Map, challengers will be able to provide information indicating that locations should or should not be available for funding. The window for filing challenges opened March 25, 2024, and close on May 8, 2024.

The NTIA also approved an OBD proposal to accept rebuttal submissions through the end of the 30-day rebuttal window, rather than on a rolling basis from challenge notification. This amended timeline is reflected in the challenge portal.

OBD remains committed to a fair and expeditious challenge process. This extension reflects the importance OBD places on accurately distributing BEAD funds to extend broadband service into unserved and underserved areas.
