How I chanced upon Physiotherapy was through my late grandfather. He was hospitalized for many months for treatment for surgery in his brain and cancer in his throat. Thus, he was bed-ridden and could not move as much as he would have loved to. He felt hopeless and thought negatively until he met his Physiotherapist. I saw the big smile on his face and him regaining confidence in his mobility after receiving Physiotherapy. He slowly regained his strength and was able to start walking slowly again. Therefore, I felt a sudden surge of purpose and realised the impact a Physiotherapist can have on someone's life.
My interest in Gerontology grew since I was young because I was mostly brought up by my grandparents. They taught me morals and life lessons through their own experience thus my personality now is mostly shaped and influenced by them. I often followed them to the wet market and listening to them speaking in their dialect which is Hokkien. Eventually, I started to pick it up by listening to them conversing with their friends. When I was sick, I was often brought to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) professionals instead of modern western clinics. During religious festivals or prayers, I always follow them around to places of worship and gain knowledge on praying proceedures and folding paper money. I was always more comfortable socializing with the elderly because I have always been surrounded by them through most of my childhood years.
