YELLOWSTONE GRAND CANYON VINTAGE PRINTS
BY
Carl Tolpo (1901-1976)
Carl Tolpo began painting the Yellowstone Grand Canyon in Yellowstone National Park in 1934. He continued his paintings on location until his death in 1976. In 1973 he completed an 8 foot by 15 foot sectional oil mural. All of his paintings were done in oil, on site, and the collection is intact held by Art by Tolpo Artist LLC. Almost every summer for over forty years he could be found near Artist Point at the Canyon painting.
Throughout the 1940’s Tolpo befriended Jack Haynes and would discuss with him his paintings of the Canyon. In the late 1940's Jack Haynes Picture Shops began to sell photogravure lithographs of Carl Tolpo paintings at various store locations throughout Yellowstone National Park. The vintage prints now offered were printed for Jack Haynes in the early 1950's and later sold by Hamilton Stores. These are photogravure lithographic prints printed in Chicago by RH Donnelley Press and Advance Lithography. If one looks closely at the print through a loupe, tiny florets are seen instead of dots. This difference creates the soft edges and tonal transitions that make the vintage quality of the image. This printing technique ended when the preference for high-speed printing and the unnatural clarity of half-tone positives became popular in the 1960’s.
Carl Tolpo became a fixture at the Canyon. At that time Ranger/naturalist Wayne F. Replogle would refer to Carl’s painting location as Tolpo Point. Other rangers picked up the name and continued the reference. Tolpo Point was approximately 150 yards closer to the falls from Artist Point. From this point, all of the elements of the canyon seemed to share equal importance. The falls, the river, and the canyon walls provided balanced interests within a specific frame of reference.

Carl Tolpo always camped in a tent each year that he summered in Yellowstone. Beginning in 1934 he camped by himself. In the 1940's and 1950's he camped with artist-wife, Lily, and three children. The 1960's camping and painting included various family members who could make the trip. In the 1970's he was alone again except occasionally with son, Vincent. Carl Tolpo baptized his children at the foot of the Lower Falls in the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. In the end, after his death, Vincent scattered his ashes over the falls. Carl Tolpo's very strong connection to the natural influences of Yellowstone led him to develop an art and life philosophy which he expressed throughout his life.
