Undergraduate researcher, Tasfia Hassan, in our group presented her research at the 15th Annual Research Symposium at South Dakota Mines. She shared her undergraduate research blending catalysis and machine learning to push smarter solutions for nitrate removal.Â

Our group presented at the 2025 Women in Science Conference, Youth in Science. Rapid City, SD. Attended by >850 seventh-grade girls and their teachers, we presented a demonstration on water filtration at this event. We showcased the construction of homemade water filters and their effectiveness in removing pollutants. Using food coloring dyes to simulate contaminants, we demonstrated how our filters quickly purified the water, visibly eliminating the color.

Our group presented three home-made water filters at the 2024 Girl Scout BIG Event held by Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons at Western Dakota Tech, 800 Michelson Dr, Rapid City, SD. More than 300 visitors attended this event.

Our group presented at the 7th annual Harvest Festival held by Youth & Family Services (YFS) on the YFS Fullerton Farm located at 230 S Ellsworth Road, Box Elder, SD.
About 1,100 people attended this event. We presented three home-made water filters and taught school kids how to build water filters for removing color from water. These filters are made of low-cost materials, including charcoal, sand, and gravels. We also talked about drinking water and discussed about the importance of water quality with people.

Our group attended an event organized by Youth & Family Services (YFS) at the Fullerton Farm of located at 230 S Ellsworth Road, Box Elder, SD.
We presented three home-made water filters and taught 30 middle school students how to build water filters for removing dyes from water. These filters are made of simple materials, including activated charcoal, sand, and gravels. We also talked about drinking water treatment and discussed about the importance of filtration and disinfection. Students were able to build their own water filters that can effectively remove the dyes from water.

Collins and Dr. Ye attended the 2023 Women in Science Conference and presented two home-made water filters on campus. Our team attended last year's event as well and we improved our water filter systems this year.
The conference is organized by Youth in Science Rapid City, Inc., which is managed by local professional women from a broad range of fields who volunteer. The conference was developed to inspire young women to pursue math and science courses in high school and consider a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field.

Rabbi, Collins, and Dr. Ye presented two home-made water filters at the 15th Annual Sturgis Brown High School Career Fair at Sturgis, SD. Our team attended last year's event as well and we improved our water filter systems this year.
Sturgis is well-known for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which attracts upward of 700,000 people each year.
